Box Score The St. Lawrence University volleyball team opened the 2024 season with a five-set victory over the SUNY Poly Wildcats Friday night at the SUNY Morrisville Tournament in Morrisville, N.Y. Set scores were 25-23, 24-26, 25-16, 20-25, and 15-10.
The win brings the Saints to a 1-0 overall record through the opening game of the season.
Even with the victory, head coach
Shelly Roiger expects to see her team up their performance when tournament action resumes Saturday.
"We were very fortunate to leave the gym with a win and there's no question in my mind that we will be better tomorrow," she said.
St. Lawrence opened strong with a victory in the first set. After the Wildcats won the second, the Scarlet and Brown responded with a victory in the third set. Poly grabbed the fourth and then the Saints earned a hard-fought victory in the neutral site opener by getting the win in the fifth set.
Newcomer
Bridget Gammons led the way for the Scarlet and Brown, registering 25 points for St. Lawrence. Her 25 kills were the fifth-most by a Saint in volleyball program history.
Araiza Acum-Santos added 14 points of her own, and also accumulated 12 digs.
Lily Snide also had 12 digs on the day.
The Saints will next be in action Saturday afternoon as the SUNY Morrisville Tournament rolls on. They face off against Alfred at 1 p.m. and then round out the weekend with a matchup against the host school SUNY Morrisville starting at 3 p.m.
