Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls 2-0 in Season Opener to SUNY Geneseo

The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team looked as if they scored late in a comeback effort, but it was called back as the Saints eventually fell 2-0 to SUNY Geneseo on Friday night in Geneseo, N.Y.

The Scarlet and Brown fell to 0-1-0 with the loss, while the Knights went to 1-0-0.

"We started the game well getting behind Geneseo and getting a few dangerous balls in front of goal," said head coach Mike Toshack "The Geneseo goal was strange and unfortunate, however, the team battled and continued to put Geneseo on the back foot. We now regroup and have a great opportunity on Sunday to play a top team in Cortland as we look to build towards the Liberty League."

The first goal of the contest came on the second shot of the contest after the first Knight shot sailed wide. In the 14th minute, Dylan Thody flicked a shot over the head of Evan Widrick in the St. Lawrence goal and saw his shot ring off the post and cleared by the defense. However, the crew called the play a goal giving Geneseo the early lead.

The Saints got themselves going following the goal, getting shots on goal from Sam Pijpers and Grant Gilmer along with an effort from Henry Brown that missed left, and the game went to half at 1-0.

Geneseo got the first four shots in the second half despite the Saints controlling possession for the most part. The first three attempts were harmless, but the fourth ended up in the back of the net as Stefen Nikolic knocked the ball in during a scramble to take the two-goal lead.

Despite the Knight's time-wasting tactics with the lead, St. Lawrence was able to threaten the goal. Forwards Max Mogul and Ryan Campbell had good looks in the following 15 minutes that went wide, which was followed by a pair of shots on the frame from Mogul and Nicholas Petrone that were stymied by Vincent Maronski.

As time went on, the stalling continued as the Saints pushed and it had looked like the offense finally broke through in the final minutes. A tremendous, long ball from Gilmer sailed into the box and was kicked into the frame. The goal was called off by the crew for offsides keeping the Saints at bay.

Widrick stopped five Geneseo shots in his collegiate debut, while Maronski matched with five of his own.

The Saints outshot the Knights 11-10 on the day, had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks, and spent 65% of their possession in the Geneseo end of the pitch.

St. Lawrence will be back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when the team heads to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons.
