Season Preview: Saints Open Fall Season with Home Invitational, Looking for Continued Success in 2024-25

The St. Lawrence University men's golf team opens the fall portion of the 2024-25 season with the St. Lawrence Invitational under first-year head coach Dave Clausen at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course this Saturday and Sunday.

The Saints will compete against Oswego, St. John Fisher, Clarkson, SUNY Canton, Nazareth, Hobart, and Paul Smiths.

"Our men's team has some great veterans who we will look to for leadership as we start our season," said Clausen. "The upperclassman leadership and a large crop of first years should make a very deep and competitive team this year. We're looking forward to opening the season with our home invitational to get things going."

Jimmy King returns for his junior season with the Scarlet and Brown, having been tabbed the Liberty League Rookie of the Year as a first year and Performer of the Year last season.

King tied for first place at the Liberty League Championships, shooting a 214 (73, 69, 72) on the weekend. He claimed the individual title after shooting par on the second hole playoff. He boasted the team's lowest score in six of ten events, including capturing medalist honors at the Oswego Invitational last October with a two-round score of 147 (72-75). He also was the runner up, leading the Saints to a first-place finish at the one-round Alvernia Invitational this spring, finished sixth at the Dr. Tim Brown Invitational, and tied for sixth at Farmingdale with a 144 (71-73) to close out the regular season.

Senior Sam Lyman also returns as a steady contributor for the Saints this season. He tied for fourth at Oswego with a 150, tied for ninth place to lead the Saints at Skidmore in October, and tied for 18th at the Alvernia Invitational.

King, Lyman, and Ben Scholes return as three of the five Liberty League Championship golfers from last season. They all helped the men's golf team to a second-place finish at Liberty League's, shooting a combined 873 on the weekend for a new program record. As a team this season, St. Lawrence won three tournaments (Clarkson Invitational, Oswego Invitational, and Alvernia Spring Invitational) and were the runner-up in two (St. Lawrence Invitational, Farmingdale Spring Invitational).

Joining the roster this season are first-years Kevin Dillion, Colin Kagan, Bob LeFavour, JD Redding, and Chris Waldorf, and returning for their sophomore campaigns is Siadhal Sweeney, Gabe Ward, Ben DeBiase, Owen Donovan and new coming sophomore Connor Murphy.

The Saints junior class is made up of King, Alex Reith and George Sherbrooke, while Lyman, Scholes, Seth Bailey, Andrew Cullen, and Ryan McLaughlin will complete their senior seasons with the Scarlet and Brown.

Following the Saints' home invitational, the Saints will head to Middlebury, Vermont for the Duke Nelson Invitational on September 14-15. St. Lawrence will also compete at the Williams College Invitational (Sept. 21-22), the Bowdoin Fall Invitational (Sept. 28-29) and the Skidmore Fall Invitational (Oct. 12-13).
