Gavars Set To Play For Latvia in 2024 IIHF World Championships

Felikss Gavars, who is coming off his sophomore year with the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team, is set to play for Latvia in the 2024 IIHF World Championship in Czechia starting Friday, May 10 and going through May 26.

"We are extremely proud of Felikss and excited to see him play in the World Championships against some of the best players in the game," said Charles W. Appleton II men's hockey coach Brent Brekke "Most of the teams have players from the NHL, the top professional leagues in Europe, and a number of the best college players from the NCAA. The experience that Felikss will gain from the tournament is tremendous! We can't wait to follow the action and watch him compete!"

The Skating Saints were led offensively by the sophomore standout Gavars, who posted 13 goals and 12 assists on the season. The Riga, Latvia native was the first Saint since Mike Marnell '18 to score more than ten goals in a season with his 13. He was also the second forward in the last five seasons to record over 20 points along with Zach Risteau, who had 23 points in 2019-20.

Gavars is a familiar face for his home country having played in the 2021-22 World Juniors and being a part of Latvian U16 and U18 squads.

Latvia will compete in Group B along with France, Germany, Kazakhstan, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, and the United States. Their first game will be at the Ostrava Arena on May 11 starting at 4:20 p.m. local and 10:20 a.m. EST against Poland.
