In a contest which came down to the final match, the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team came up just short falling 5-4 to Union in the first round of the Liberty League Championships on Friday evening at the Reis Tennis Center at Cornell University.
St. Lawrence saw their season end at 12-8, while Union improved to 11-7 and advanced in the tournament.
The Saints went down early losing two of the three doubles matches. At number one,
Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and
Molly Jespersen held down the number one spot defeating Chara Meidani and Gracie Nicol.
St. Lawrence would take the 3-2 lead however in singles after a pair of wins from
Ariane Karera and
Yvette Karera at three and four. Ariane defeated Meidani 6-3, 6-4 at three, while Yvette beat Skylar Semon 6-1, 6-0, 6-1.
It became a seesaw match with the teams alternating wins to a 4-4 score. In the back-and-forth,
Meredith Macey claimed a 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 win over Sydney Alphabet to give St. Lawrence four.
The match came down to one where Aksdal-Jansen and Nicol alternated sets setting up winner-take-all. In the final set, Nicol would secure the 6-3 win to take the day.
