Two goals each from
Liz Evans and
Jessica LaPlaca was unfortunately not enough, as the seventh-seeded St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team fell 19-6 in the first round of Liberty League Tournament to the second-seeded William Smith Herons on Tuesday in Geneva, N.Y.
In addition to the two goals, LaPlaca also had a ground ball and won two draw controls.
Morgan Arakelian had a goal and two assists and
Bella Hillman also scored for the Scarlet and Brown.
Haley Sundstrom won three draw controls, while
Kelsey O'Brien led St. Lawrence defensively with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
William Smith got the first five goals of the game, and it wasn't until five minutes in that the Saints got on the board from a free-position shot by
Bella Hillman.
Morgan Arakelian ended the quarter scoring with 12 seconds remaining, but the Saints trailed 9-2 after the first 15 minutes.
After a couple of Heron goals in the second, the Saints went on a run of their own. Arakelian set up top-scorer Evans for her first goal of the day. Sixty seven seconds later, Evans got another goal and Arakelian got another assist on the play, giving the senior 27 assists on the year. A minute and a half later, LaPlaca scored the fifth goal. William Smith responded with two goals to end the half, taking a 13-5 lead into the locker room.
The Saints failed to score in the third, while the Herons added four to their total, opening a 17-5 lead.
LaPlaca scored her second goal of the game to open the scoring in the fourth quarter, but that was the only goal for the Scarlet and Brown in the second half.
Maddie Montgomery had five goals and an assist for William Smith, while Natalie Daniels and Allie McGinty each tallied six points with four goals and two assists for both.
Courtney Lynn made six saves for the Saints, while on the other end, Maura Smeader had four saves for the Herons.
William Smith dominated the shots 39-14 and recorded 25 shots on goal, beating the 10 from the Saints. The Herons were 15-for-16 on clears while the Saints went 13-for-23. The home team also picked up more ground balls, caused more turnovers, and doubled the Saints 18-9 in draw controls.
The Saints finish the year 5-12. William Smith moves to 16-2 with the victory and advances to the Liberty League Semifinals to play the winner of the three-six matchup between Union and Rochester.
