Desjardins Plates Four Runs in Baseball's 14-6 Win over RIT

Junior infielder Sean Desjardins continued his red-hot week going 2-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI, while fellow junior Michael Hutchins pitched 6.1 innings striking out seven and relenting just one earned run as the St. Lawrence University baseball team earned a 14-6 victory over RIT in game one of the three-game weekend series at Tom Fay Field.

St. Lawrence improved to 8-16 on the year and picked up their second league win of the year, while RIT fell below .500 at 12-13.

Brett Federico, John Gannon, and Owen McClintock also had strong days at the dish plating two RBI a piece. In relief of Hutchins, Brendan Karadenes pitched 2.2 innings giving up no earned runs and striking out two Tigers to shut the door.

Following a one, two, three top of the first for Hutchins, the Saints scorched the Tigers for four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Desjardins came to the plate with two outs and a loaded base path with Timothy Connor, Gannon, and Willie Landman occupying the bags. The junior ripped an opposite-field double off the right field wall and came up safely at second base with three runs crossing home. After a walk to Matt Davis, John Donnellan would make it a 4-0 game by smacking a single through the left side.

The score survived until the fourth when RIT would get their first run off a single with runners on.

St. Lawrence answered right away scoring thrice more in the bottom half. The Saints chased the RIT starter with a double to left field by Federico to put runners on second and third, then rocked the reliever with a Gannon single to make it 6-1. Desjardins would then reach on an error scoring another run to make it 7-1.

After another lonely run from the Tigers, the bats were back to work for the sixth where a stolen base play, and a wild pitch with runners on made it 9-2.

RIT finally got to Hutchins a bit in the seventh getting a pair of seeing-eye singles. A couple more bad-luck singles helped them cut into the lead at 9-6.

The Scarlet and Brown faced the adversity head-on and one-up the Tigers in the bottom half. Three straight walks to start the inning prompted a switch for RIT but it did not work as Federico and McClintock hit back-to-back singles ballooning the score to 13-9. Desjardins then doubled down the lie to score McClintock to further push the envelope.

The rest was up to Karadenes and the defense, who each stepped up to the plate to shut the door and secure the win.

Both teams will lineup once again at Tom Fay Field tomorrow afternoon at noon. The teams will play a pair of nine-inning games to decide the three-game series.
