Julia Gosling helped power Team Canada to a 6-5 overtime victory over Team USA in the gold medal game competing in her first ever IIHF World Championships on Sunday in Utica, N.Y.
After the first period, it seemed like it might be another tight contest between the top two teams in the world, but that changed quickly in the second period. Gosling, playing in her first world championship, carried the puck into the circle and fired a shot that beat USA goaltender Aerin Frankel low glove side to put the Canadian's back in front with a 2-1 lead.
"Julia has worked extremely hard to put herself in position to be on Team Canada and make an impact on the team as well," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Her goal last night, her play throughout the tournament and a gold medal are rewards for her efforts."
"She is the first person on our team to be excited for someone else's success, now we all can be excited for Julia's!"
The American's rebounded to take a 3-2 lead, the back-and-forth play continued, and Colgate's Danielle Serdachny scored the game-winner 5:16 into overtime to give Canada a 6-5 win over the United States and the gold medal.
The win was the 13th gold medal for Canada at the women's worlds and the first since 2022.
The St. Lawrence community would also like to extend a round of congratulations to the General Manager of Team Canada, our very own Gina Kingsbury '04!
