Ben Hutchinson surpassed his 100th career goal with six goals and two assists to lead the fourth-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a blowout 15-4 road win over the Ithaca Bombers on Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.
In addition to Hutchinson tying his career-high in goals and now sitting at 103 career goals,
Judge Murphy had three goals to go along with five ground balls and
Cam Croasdaile had a pair of goals on a day that saw nine Saints tally points.
Paddy Condon picked up 14 ground balls and was 15-for-21 in the faceoff circle.
Hutchinson was on fire early with four goals in the first quarter. In addition to the four goals from the senior captain,
Zack Corsi, Murphy, and Croasdaile all scored, as the Saints opened up a 7-0 lead after the first quarter of play.
In the second, the Bombers were finally able to get some offense, scoring three goals, but the Saints matched that to bring a 10-3 lead into the half. Croasdaile and Murphy both scored in this period and
Bobby Wells found the back of the net as well.
After the half, the Saints surrendered a goal early, but two goals from Hutchinson and a goal plus a helper from Murphy eliminated any hope for a Bombers comeback. The Saints led 13-4 going into the fourth.
In the fourth, the Saints shut out the Bombers once again, while getting a goal from
Daniel Mahoney and
Asa Beach, who scored his first of the year off a pass from Hutchinson, who got his eighth point of the day with the assist.
"Really proud of the team today!" said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "I thought that was a great bounce back effort overall. It was nice to get off the bus with a fast start on both ends of the field.
No player for Ithaca had more than one point in the game. Kyle Proctor, Jace Dockx, Cullen Adams, and Charlie Niebuhr all recorded goals for the Bombers, while John Sramac had four ground balls and Aiden Martin caused two turnovers defensively.
Michael Marinello saved seven of eleven shot attempts for St. Lawrence and Cole Corrigan had 12 saves for Ithaca.
The Scarlet and Brown outshot the Bombers 42-31 and 27-13 on shots on goal. St. Lawrence picked up 29 ground balls compared to 23 for Ithaca. Both teams did well clearing, with the Saints going 17-for-18 and Ithaca clearing 12-of-13.
The win got the Saints to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the Liberty League. Ithaca fell to 6-6 and 0-4 in the conference.
"We will need to keep that attention to detail in preparation for our next conference game on Wednesday," Mahoney added.
St. Lawrence will next be in action at Clarkson (6-7,0-4) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
