Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Murphy Tallies 200th Point, No. 5 Saints Double Up on No. 8 Union in 12-6 Win

Judge Murphy tallied four goals and assisted on two others, surpassing his 200th career point helping lead the fifth-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 12-6 win over eighth-ranked Union on Saturday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.

Murphy also picked up three ground balls on the afternoon. Ben Hutchinson tallied two goals and assisted on two others for four points, while Cam Croasdaile and Bobby Wells each scored twice. Caleb Torres and Paddy Condon notched goals for the Saints. Condon picked up a team-best eight ground balls and went 12-for-21 from the faceoff circle, while Charlie Miele picked up five ground balls and caused one turnover, while Tripp Clark picked up three ground balls and caused four turnovers.

Quick sticks from Hutchinson and Croasdaile gave the Saints a 2-0 lead within the first two minutes of play. Unassisted tallies from Condon and Wells gave the Scarlet and Brown the 4-2 edge after the first quarter of play.

Matt McKenzie scored for Union to start the second and bring the game back with one, but Wells' second of the game on the man-up and Murphy's first of the game put the Saints back up by two. Peter Kip scored his second of the game for Union to close the second, but St. Lawrence led 6-4 on the scoreboard at halftime.

A good majority of the third quarter was a battle of the defense and both teams and goaltenders were up to the task. Union's Jake Mabardy broke through at 3:55, but that goal kickstarted a six goal run from the Saints, including three goals at the end of the third, and one with seven seconds to play, putting the Saints up 9-5.

Hutchinson scored to start the third and back-to-back goals from Murphy gave St. Lawrence the ultimate edge and sealed the win.

"That was a fun team win on a beautiful North Country day in front of a great crowd!" said head coach Mike Mahoney. "I loved the team's compete level at both ends of the field. I am proud of the effort and look forward to preparing for the next league game."

Union was led by two goals, two assists and three ground balls from Kip, while Jack Thompson picked up two ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Saints' goaltender Michael Marinello finished with eight saves and five ground balls between the pipes, while Dan Donahue made 13 for Union.

St. Lawrence outshot Union 41-33 including 25-14 in shots on goal. The Saints were a perfect 25-25 on clears, picked up 34 ground balls, went 1-for-5 on the man-up and killed off both of the Garnet Chargers extra-man opportunities.

The Saints improved to 10-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play, while Union fell to 7-2 and 1-1.

Next weekend, the Saints host Vassar on Saturday, April 6 at 12 p.m.
