Ben Hutchinson had four points, including two goals and two assists to power the fifth-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 14-5 win over the Vassar Brewers Saturday afternoon at Hall Leet Stadium in Canton, N.Y.
In addition to the four points, Hutchinson also picked up two ground balls.
Brian Souza had one goal and two assists, while
Judge Murphy had one goal, two assists, and picked up four ground balls.
Tripp Clark was the star of the show defensively, picking up seven ground balls and causing six turnovers.
Bobby Wells scored twice and picked up a pair of ground balls.
The Saints were remarkable on both ends of the field as they opened with a 4-0 lead after the first quarter off of goals from
Zack Corsi,
Ted Wilson, Souza, and Wells.
The second quarter was highlighted by four goals from St. Lawrence, including
David Herlihy's first of the season. Wells added his second goal in the quarter, while Hutchinson scored three points in the second with a goal and two assists, as the Scarlet and Brown took a commanding 8-2 lead into halftime.
Both teams slowed the pace down in the third quarter as both defenses stood strong protecting the net, forcing turnovers, and a few shot clock violations. The Saints got an early goal from
Cam Croasdaile two minutes into the quarter but surrendered back-to-back goals to Vassar. With four seconds left, Hutchinson scored to push the St. Lawrence lead to 10-4 going into the final 15 minutes.
The Scarlet and Brown came back to life offensively in the fourth, as they outscored the Brewers 4-1 in the final 15 minutes. Saints' leading scorer Murphy scored his 38th goal of the season and first-year
Ethan Friedberg tallied his first collegiate goal.
"A solid effort today," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "It was nice to see a lot of guys chip in offensively and the defense was stout. It will be a quick turnaround for our last non-conference game on Tuesday."
TJ Carl was the only Brewer with multiple points, scoring two goals. Jack Palmer and Solomon Hess each recorded two ground balls for Vassar.
Goaltender
Michael Marinello had eight saves for the Saints, while Drew Quinn had 17 saves for the Brewers.
St. Lawrence outshot Vassar 53-31 in total attempts and 31-15 on shots on goal. The Saints capitalized on 2-of-4 man-up opportunities, caused 19 turnovers, and outplayed the Brewers 43-29 on ground balls.
The Saints maintained their perfect record with the victory, improving to 11-0 and 3-0 in the Liberty League. The 11-0 start is a program record for the Scarlet and Brown and the best start since the 2016 team, who advanced to the Final Four. The Brewers fell to 7-4 and 1-3 in league play.
St. Lawrence will look to continue their winning ways as they begin a three-game road trip, starting with a non-conference matchup against Middlebury (5-5, 4-2) on Tuesday.
