Game Recap: Softball |

Pitchers No-Hit SUNY Canton in Game One, Rose Adds Eight RBI as Saints Earn Doubleheader Sweep

A combined no-hitter for the St. Lawrence University softball pitching staff kicked off the day on the right note, and Meredith Rose added eight RBI over two Saints wins over SUNY Canton, 16-0 and 13-5, on the road.

Isabelle Wilson, Layne Fritz and Olivia Caporale combined for the no-no in the opening game, which was shortened to five innings on a mercy rule.

The Saints also got things done at the plate, recording 24 hits over the two victories. Maeve Thompson recorded four hits, Sofia Camillieri added three. Thompson also added three RBI, and so did Allison Kloft.

"I'm very proud of the team for taking care of business today," said head coach Rosie Phillips after the game.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 16, SUNY Canton 0

The Saints plated a season-high 16 runs in game one, and they didn't waste any time putting runners on the basepaths.

In the top of the first inning, Thompson did her job as the leadoff runner by reaching base via a walk. Thompson then swiped second, and Vivian Johnson also reached via base on balls. Kloft advanced both runners into scoring position, then Meredith Rose drilled a three-run shot over the center field fence to give the Scarlet and Brown an early lead.

The Saints sent first-year Isabelle Wilson to the bump for her first-career collegiate start, and she didn't disappoint in her first inning. Andrea Cary reaching on an error was the only activity on the basepaths for the Roos in the first. The game would remain that way through Wilson's three innings – she came out of the game surrendering no runs on no hits, four walks and adding four strikeouts. She got the win.

In the fourth, the Saints got back on the offensive grind, plating six additional runs. Rose scored Thompson on a sac fly to kick off the scoring. Then with three runners on, Johnson came around on a wild pitch to score the second run of the fourth, and that opened the floodgates. Olivia Caporale had an RBI groundout, then Emily Crain and Sofia Camillieri notched back to back singles to make it 9-0.

The Saints then had an even more productive fifth inning. Kloft, Camillieri, Caporale, Crain and Thompson all added RBI in the last inning to cement the victory for the Saints.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 13, SUNY Canton 5

The day of firsts on the mound continued for St. Lawrence, with Caporale getting the nod for the second game, her first start of the 2024 campaign.

SLU was first to cross the plate again in game two, with Thompson taking home on a throw after Allison Kloft grounded out.

In the third inning, the Saints tacked on two more runs to go up 3-0. Caporale reached on an error by Cary at third base, with Zola Braswell coming around to score. Emily Siansky also came around, initially being called out. But after a conversation, the call was overturned and the Saints' run counted.

Canton had an answer in the bottom half of the inning, however, giving them their first run of the game on a muffed throw by Braswell. That cut the Saints' lead to two.

That wouldn't last, as the Saints added to their lead making it 6-1 going into the fifth inning. However, the Roos strung together their first strong bout of offense in the bottom half of the fifth. After Cary reached base in the fifth, Emma Hayes drove her in with an RBI knock. Then Elly Cunningham launched a two-run homer off the scoreboard to make the score 6-4. SUNY Canton plated another run before the end of the fifth to make it a one-run affair.

In the sixth, the Saints needed runs and they managed to find them. Camillieri, Fritz and Siansky all reached base in the early stages of the sixth, then Caelen Jahnle recorded a walk to bring home Camillieri. Thompson then drove Fritz and Siansky in with a two-run single through the left side.

SLU would load the bases again, then Rose cleared them with a three-run double to the wall in left-center field. That extra-base hit was followed up with another from Camillieri, scoring Rose. When all was said and done, the Saints led 13-5. That was all they needed to lock down their second abbreviated win of the day.
