Forty one saves from
Emma-Sofie Nordström and goals from
Sarah Marchand,
Aly McLeod and
Julia Gosling powered the seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-1 win over No. 13 Yale in game two of the ECAC Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
Marchand put the Saints on the board first, as she corralled the puck in the neutral zone, beat two Yale defenders, and slipped the puck underneath Bulldog's goaltender Pia Dukaric's pad for the 1-0 lead.
After the first frame, Yale held a slight 11-10 edge in shots on goal, but the Saints held onto their 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs came out swinging in the second period and outshot the Saints 24-5.
Despite the shot advantage, the Saints were the ones able to find the back of the net once again.
Moving quickly in transition, in a 3-on-2 situation,
Abby Hustler tipped the puck back to McLeod, who beat Dukaric glove side with the one timer.
Anna Segedi also assisted on the play.
After two periods of play, Yale led 35-15 in shots on goal.
Late in the third period, Gosling added an insurance goal for the Saints, firing a rifle of a shot just underneath the crossbar for the 3-0 advantage.
Much like Friday, Yale would not go quietly, as Jordan Ray scored on the power play after capitalizing on a scramble in front of Nordström. The Bulldogs weren't able to get any closer than that before time expired on the third period.Â
"Well, Appleton was certainly good to us this year and we gave the fans another night to enjoy!" said head coach
Chris Wells. "We were really fortunate to get up 1-0 late in the first on a great individual effort by Sarah."
"Yale dominates us in the second and we somehow come out of it with a two-goal lead off a nice line rush with Hustler and Aly. Emma was as good as we've seen all year in that period and was probably the difference in the series. We righted the ship for the third and played a much better game with Julia's insurance goal."
Nordström finished with 41 saves for the Saints, while Dukaric finished with 13. Anna Phillips played nearly 12 minutes in relief and finished with three.
Yale finished 1-for-3 on the power play and killed off all three of St. Lawrence's power play opportunities. The Bulldogs finished with a 42-19 advantage in shots on goal.
"Another fantastic and enthusiastic crowd here today for our team," Wells added. "It was greatly appreciated by all of us!"
St. Lawrence improved to 27-9-0 on the season, while Yale saw their season end at 16-15-1. This afternoon's win marked the 19th at Appleton for the Saints this season, breaking the program record for wins at home, previously held at 18 from 2005-06.
The Saints will advance to the ECAC semifinals for the first time since 2017-18 and will play Clarkson at Colgate on Friday, March 8. Game times have yet to be determined.
