Senior
Judge Murphy and first-year
Daniel Mahoney both scored four goals apiece, as the No. 15 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team earned a 12-8 victory over St. John Fisher in Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon.
Murphy continued his torrid start to the season, while the four goals from Mahoney were a season and career high.
Zack Corsi,
Ben Hutchinson,
Cam Croasdaile and
Paddy Condon all contributed one goal each in the effort for the Saints.
St. Lawrence opened the scoring a little over six minutes into the game courtesy of an unassisted Murphy goal, before Mahoney scored his first at the 6:56 mark to double the Saints lead. Just three seconds later, on the following faceoff, Condon won the draw and then proceed to split through the Cardinal defense before slotting it past the goalie to make it 3-0 after the opening 15 minutes.
The Saints continued their hot start into the second period as they rattled off the next four goals courtesy of Murphy and Mahoney, who scored two each before the 10-minute mark. St. John Fisher would finally break open the Saints' defense, as Ethan Kesselring would dent the back of the net off a feed from Braeden McNeill with three and a half minutes to go in the quarter. Another Murphy goal at the 1:29 mark pushed the lead to 8-1, before a late Cardinal goal saw St. Lawrence take a 8-2 lead headed into the half.
The second half opened in similar fashion to the first, as the Saints scored the first four goals out of the break to build a double-digit lead. Murphy found Hutchinson just one minute into the period before three unassisted goals courtesy of Croasdaile, Mahoney and Corsi saw the lead increase to 12-2.
The Cardinals made a late push in the period scoring two goals with 23 and 21 seconds left, Jordan Leuze scored his first of the game, assisted by Matthew Kemmis, before Kemmis scored one of his own two seconds later off a dish from Aidan Smith.
St. John Fisher dominated the fourth period, outscoring the Saints 4-0 in the final 15 minutes, dumping in two man-up goals to cut the lead down to four. The St. Lawrence defense held strong though behind junior goalie
Michael Marinello, as the lead would prove too much for the Cardinals to overcome.
"I thought we played three pretty good quarters of lacrosse and then got away from it a bit in the fourth," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "Credit to Fisher for battling throughout and fortunately we got excellent goaltending from Mike the entire game. We'll get back to work to get ready for another battle on Wednesday!"
"Shout out to the Saints for taking care of Yale in two. We enjoyed watching that wrap up on the Premier coach bus as we headed north!"
Hutchinson added two assists to go along with his goal while Murphy, Condon and
Ben Kniskern all dished out one assist of their own. Condon controlled the face-off circle going 19-23, while also scooping up 14 ground balls.
Marinello tied a career-best with 19 saves between the pipes for the Saints, facing 44 shots in the win.
Kemmis, Leuze and Timmy Salit all scored two goals for St. John Fisher, while goalie Ben Hammond made 13 saves in net.
The win sees the Saints improve to 4-0 on the season, while St. John Fisher fell to 1-3.
