Game 1: St. Lawrence 5, Amherst 11
The first game was a high-scoring affair, with runs for both teams coming in the second inning after neither side threatened in the first.
In the top of the second, the Mammoths got a pair of runs off a single, a walk, then two one-RBI singles to make the game 2-0.
The Saints got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame. Landman walked,
John Gannon singled, and after a bunt by
Max Cloutier moved the two into scoring position, Landman scored on a wild pitch.
Amherst tripled their score in the very next inning, as three straight singles followed by a three-run home run gave the Mammoths a 6-1 lead.
The Scarlet and Brown didn't let up though, as they responded once again in the bottom of the inning. A walk by Brinker and a single for Connor put two runners on base with the heart of the order approaching. A single from Landman scored Brinker and then the Saints got some help from Amherst, as an errored play in right field scored two more, making the score now 6-4 in favor of the Mammoths.
Both teams traded runs once again in the fourth with the Mammoths getting another to put their total to seven, while the Saints got an RBI groundout from Connor to put the score at 7-5.
Amherst continued to get runs following the fourth inning by adding one more in the fifth, another in the sixth, and their 10th and 11th runs of the game in the seventh.
The Saints, despite showing their high-powered offense in the early game, were unable to keep up with the Mammoths and didn't record a hit in the final three innings.
In their final at-bats trailing 11-6, Gannon reached on a fielding error with one out, but Amherst got the next two outs to close the books.
First-year
David Zuhlsdorf got the start in the game pitching two innings and striking out three.
Joshua Polumbo,
Sam Fosberg,
Brendan Karadenes, and
Michael Flyzik combined to pitch the last five innings striking out six batters along the way.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 4, Amherst 8
The Scarlet and Brown wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game two as they got a leadoff home run by Brinker to get their first lead of the day.
The Mammoths offense showed up once again as they managed to draw two walks, get five hits, put up a six spot in the bottom of the first, and opened up a five-run lead after one.
JJ Humenay got the start on the mound for the Saints, and after a tough first inning, the Beaconsfield, Quebec native settled down. In the second and third, he pitched two innings of shutout ball while fanning three before being replaced by Brenner in the fourth.
The Saints tacked on another run in the fourth as three straight singles from Connor, Landman, and Cloutier set up an at-bat for the first-year Davis, whose sacrifice fly scored Connor to trim the Mammoths' lead to four.
Amherst managed to get a couple more runs in the bottom of the fifth as the Saints were now behind 8-2 but the Scarlet and Brown responded immediately in the next inning.
Landman reached on an error and Cloutier doubled to put a pair in scoring position. Davis delivered once again by driving in both Landman and Cloutier to get his second and third RBI of the night. The hit got the score to 8-4 in favor of the Mammoths.
After a shutout inning pitched by Andre, the Saints went into the seventh with some work to do but could not plate any runs.
Next up:
St. Lawrence returns to the Northeast to begin Liberty League play at the University of Rochester. The Saints will play three at the Yellow Jackets; a single game Saturday at 4 and a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon.
