Saints' Offense Explodes For 22 Runs in Twin Bill Sweep of Knox

The Saints earned a win in walk-off fashion in game one and exploded for a nine-run third inning in game two to power the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a sweep over Knox on day three of their spring break trip in Davenport, Fla.

St. Lawrence won their fourth straight and saw their record improve to 5-3 on the season.

Offensively, Timothy Connor had a great day going 3-for-5 with 2 walks, five RBI, and two runs scored. Sophomore catcher John Donnellan went 3-6 with a walk-off single in game one, a double, and four RBI in total on the day.

In game two, John Gannon continued his hot start going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, while first-year Mike Siano chipped in two RBI with a double.

On the bump, Boden Driscoll tossed five and two-thirds with two strikeouts in game one, while graduate student Teaghin Andre earned his first win at St. Lawrence by pitching one and a third with two strikeouts. In game two, Liam Hickey earned his first collegiate win spinning four innings of three-hit ball giving up just one run and striking out four.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 8, Knox 7

St. Lawrence immediately got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning off an RBI groundout by Willie Landman that scored Brett Federico, who had reached on a walk earlier in the inning.

In the third, the Saints came alive at the plate adding four more runs to build a 5-0 lead. The Saints took advantage of a leadoff error by Knox, as Federico, Connor, and Landman put together three straight singles with Connor getting two RBI and Landman posting one run batted in.

The Scarlet and Brown weren't finished there, as Donnellan smashed a double to left center, scoring Max Cloutier for the fifth run of the inning.

Driscoll was lights out in the early game. The first-year from Portsmouth, N.H pitched the first five innings without allowing a hit. Only two base runners managed to get on for the Prairie Fire in this span. One on an error in the first, and another via a walk in the fourth, but Driscoll pitched around both of them.

The top of the sixth was a different story, however. Knox got their first hit on a one-out single in the frame, then poured it on after that. A double, three singles, and a hit by a pitch in the inning erased the Saints' lead as the Prairie Fire tied the game in just one inning at 5-5 with Andre limiting the damage in the final third of the inning.

The Saints didn't let this phase them, as they gained the lead back in the very next half-inning. Stephen Colangelo led off the inning by reaching on an error and Brinker. After a ground ball moved Colangelo and Brinker to third and second respectively, Connor reached on a fielder's choice to score Colangelo to get the score to 6-5 in favor of St. Lawrence. Brinker later scored off a wild pitch to give the Saints a two-run advantage.

Knox would once again knot things up in the top of the seventh as a two-run home run made it a 7-7 game.

The Saints started the bottom of the seventh on a high note as Eoin Morrissey singled then Mike DiStefano stole second as a pinch-runner. He advanced to third off a sacrifice bunt from Sean Desjardins as the winning run was now 90 feet away with one out.

Donnellan, who had a big double earlier in the game delivered once again with a single, scoring DiStefano and giving the Saints the walk-off victory.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 14, Knox 3

The Saints broke the bats out in this one starting in the second inning. Gannon started with a single and Desjardins reached on an error. This set up an at-bat for Donnellan who picked up right where he left off in game one by delivering a two RBI double to start the Saints with a 2-0 advantage.

The next inning was an explosive one for the Scarlet and Brown, who sent 13 batters to the plate en route to scoring a whopping nine runs. Highlights of this inning include an RBI double, and single from Connor and a two-run homer from Gannon, along with a sacrifice fly from Siano. At the end of the frame, the Saints managed 11 runs to take a commanding lead.

With a huge lead to work with, Hickey didn't give the Saints anything to be worried about. The Yarmouth, Maine native started strong with two strikeouts in the first and held Knox scoreless for the first three innings.

In the fourth, a walk sandwiched between two doubles gave the Prairie Fire their first run of the game, but Hickey held them there as the starter for the Saints stranded runners at second and third after getting a popup and a groundout to close the fourth inning.

The Saints added more insurance runs later in the game, scoring off a wild pitch in the fifth and then two more runs in the sixth off an RBI single from Jack Finnegan, and an RBI double from Siano.

John Igoe would come on in relief for the fifth and sixth innings giving up four runs but striking out four batters. Noah Spaulding closed things out in the seventh surrendering just one hit and fanning two batters to end things.
