Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 10 Saints Upset No. 5 Christopher Newport in Another Overtime Showdown at the Mustang Classic

Judge Murphy scored with 44 seconds to play in overtime to power the No. 10 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 13-12 overtime upset win over No. 5 Christopher Newport in their second game of the Mustang Classic on Saturday afternoon in Stevenson, Md.

With the win, the Saints improved to 8-0 on the season, defeating two teams in the top-10 over the course of the Mustang Classic. Christopher Newport fell to 6-2 with the loss.

Murphy finished with three goals, two assists and four ground balls, while Cam Croasdaile also recorded a hat trick. Ben Hutchinson finished with two goals and two assists, while Daniel Mahoney, Ted Wilson, Brian Souza, Bobby Wells and John Mahoney all scored for the Saints. Paddy Condon helped prove why he ranks third in the nation, going 16-for-28 in the faceoff circle with eight ground balls.

Kevin Miller put the Captains on the board first, but three straight goals for the Saints, one from John Mahoney and two from Murphy, put St. Lawrence up 3-1 midway through the first quarter.

Christopher Newport battled back to tie the game 4-4 with 53 seconds remaining in the first.

Hutchinson broke the tie at 4:53 of the second to make it 5-4, but two straight goals from the Captains put them back in control at 6-5. A long-range shot from Wells with 14 seconds to play, knotted the game 6-6 just before halftime.

St. Lawrence went on a run in the third outscoring the Captains 4-1, building a 10-7 lead heading into the final quarter.

Croasdaile scored first in the fourth to make it 11-7, but Christopher Newport managed to claw their way back with a 5-1 run to tie the game back up 12-12. The final 6:34 of the fourth remained scoreless to send the Saints to their second-straight overtime.

Much like yesterday's game, Sam Smith caused the turnover, and the ball was picked up by Podvey, who outran a Captain for the successful clear. Podvey passed off to Hutchinson, who found Caleb Torres about 25 yards out. Torres made a quick bounce pass, which was scooped up by Murphy for the overtime game-winning goal.

"It was a great weekend of lacrosse!" said head coach Mike Mahoney. "Just really proud of everyone's contribution across the board. "These types of games, should help us a great deal moving forward. As good as it feels, we know that we will have to hit the reset tomorrow and start preparing for the start of Liberty League play."

Micheal Marinello recorded 13 saves for the Saints, while Zac Hanway made six and Declan McCulloch made four in a relief effort.

Drew Miller finished with four goals for the Captains, while Andrew Cook added two goals and four assists. Warner Cabaniss finished 12-for-27 in the faceoff circle and grabbed seven ground balls.

Christopher Newport outshot the Saints 51-34, while the Scarlet and Brown held a 33-26 advantage in ground balls. Neither team was able to capitalize on their man-up advantages.

The Saints will continue on their spring break and will travel to Saratoga Springs to open league play at Skidmore on March 23 at 12 p.m.
