Ben Hutchinson scored two minutes and 36 seconds into overtime to power the No. 10 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 9-8 win over No. 11 York College on Friday morning at the Mustang Classic in Stevenson, Md.
Judge Murphy finished with a hat trick and two assists, while Hutchinson tallied two for the Saints.
Caleb Torres,
Ted Wilson, and
Cam Croasdaile all finished with a goal and an assist and
Bobby Wells scored once.
Paddy Condon went 13-for-20 in the faceoff circle, picking up a team-high eight ground balls, while
Tripp Clark caused four turnovers and picked up two ground balls.
Off an opening faceoff win by Condon, Wilson capitalized for the first goal of the game within the opening minute of play.
York responded with a man-up goal about five minutes in to make it 1-1.
With 90 seconds to play in the first,
Daniel Mahoney caused a turnover and caught York in their defensive zone, passed off to Murphy, who made it 2-1 before the first quarter expired.
The Saints struck again to open the second quarter as Wilson found Hutchinson to make it 3-1. York looked to rebound, but a huge save by
Michael Marinello and outlet pass to
Lucas Podvey helped set Wells up for the fourth goal of the game.
Croasdaile added one more for the Saints, but York regained some control scoring the next two to make it a 5-3 game.
St. Lawrence held onto its 5-3 lead at halftime.
York brought the game within one off a goal from Jackson Shields, but Murphy tallied his 26th of the season to make it 6-4. Torres then scored his first of the season for the 7-4 lead.
York outscored the Saints 4-1 from the end of the third through the majority of the fourth, including three straight goals for Coleton Mahorney, but the Saints held the Spartans at bay with an 8-8 tie to send the game to overtime.
The Saints looked for the goal off a shot from Murphy, but Spartans' goalkeeper Jack Keller was up to the task, making the save to give York possession. Shortly after a good clear, Clark caused the turnover and passed off to Torres, who found Hutchinson on the crease to score the overtime game winner.
"Really proud of the resiliency and effort across the board," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "We came down here to play in these types of games and we got what we asked for. From Madison, Wis. to Baltimore, Md. OT has been good to the Saints in the last 15 hours!"
Mahorney led Spartans with three goals, while Vinny Facciponti picked up a team-high five ground balls, going 8-for-21 on the faceoff, while Brent Blackmon caused four turnover.
Marinello finished with 11 saves, while Keller made nine for York.
York finished with a 42-33 advantage in shots, but the Saints picked up 36 ground balls to the Spartans' 32. York finished 2-for-3 on the man-up.
St. Lawrence improved to 7-0 on the season, while York fell to 2-4.
The Saints will face a quick turnaround at the highly-competitive Mustang Classic, as they faceoff against No. 5 Christopher Newport tomorrow at 1:15 p.m.
