Anna Segedi's overtime game winner powered the No. 8 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to an upset over No. 3 Colgate Raiders 3-2 in an overtime thriller on Saturday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
Â
The Saints came out fast and controlled the fast pace of play in the first period. They contained the potent Colgate offense and created high quality chances of their own. Over halfway through the first period, SLU cashed in. Segedi capitalized on a Colgate turnover on their offensive blueline and skated in on a breakaway against Colgate goaltender Hannah Murphy, and Segedi beat Murphy under her blocker to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
Â
Colgate had a late power-play opportunity to equalize the game before the period ended, but Saints' goaltender
Emma-Sofie Nordström shut the door.
Â
After the first period, SLU outshot Colgate 11-6 and led 1-0.
Â
The Raiders turned the momentum of the game with a dominant second period. The momentum first began to turn on an early Saints' power-play. Colgate's penalty kill had multiple key blocked shots and they negated SLU's third-ranked power-play. Later in the period, a beautiful transition opportunity was finished by Colgate's Danielle Serdachny, who beat Nordström over her blocker.
Â
Colgate would strike again in the last minute of the middle frame. Their top-ranked power-play did not need beautiful puck movement to beat the Saints' PK, but instead, a shot from the point that ricocheted off two SLU defenders and past Nordström.
Â
Colgate led 2-1 after two periods of play.
Â
The third period was evenly played between the two teams, and the furious pace of play continued.
Â
Abby Hustler drew an interference penalty on a St. Lawrence icing that gave the Saints their fourth power-play of the game. SLU was previously 0-3, but capitalized this time. On the power play, Gosling sent a shot from the point that was stopped by Murphy, but the rebound popped out and Hustler sent it home, five-hole.
                                                                                                                         Â
Hustler's game-tying goal and some big saves towards the end of the period by Nordström sent the game to overtime.
Â
Early in overtime, Hustler was called for a cross checking. The Saints penalty-kill stepped up to the challenge and killed off Colgate's 4-on-3 power-play.
Â
Only a few moments after the Colgate power play expired, Segedi called game. In the offensive zone,
Mae Batherson walked the blue-line past Serdachny to a wide-open lane in the slot. She then fed a gorgeous pass to Segedi backdoor, who beat a sliding Murphy. Appleton erupted as the Saints took down the Raiders!
"Another very exciting finish and game in Appleton today," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Our power play came through again to tie it. We had a huge penalty kill in overtime and that led to the game winner. Mae made a wonderful pass to Anna, who connected on the one timer for the winner!"
Â
Â
Nordström finished with 25 saves in the win, while Murphy had 17 in the loss. Overall, Colgate outshot St. Lawrence 27-20 in shot-on-net and the Saints outshot the Raiders 51-43 in total attempts.
Â
SLU finished 1-4 on the power-play and Colgate went 1-3.
Â
"Colgate is so good on the rush and in transition, so we had our hands full for a lot of moments during the game," added Wells. "Serdachny had the game on her stick with nine seconds left and we got a great bounce for it to stay out of the net."
Â
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 21-9-0 overall and 14-4-0 in ECAC play with the win, while Colgate fell to 24-6-1 and 15-3-0 respectively.
Â
"We have had great attendance and turnout all season and I'm glad they have been treated to entertaining games this season. We will certainly enjoy it for the next few days and then get back to it for our game next Friday at Quinnipiac," said Wells.
Â
The Saints head on the road for another big ECAC weekend against ranked opponents. First, on Friday, St. Lawrence takes on Quinnipiac at 6:00 p.m., and then Princeton on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
