Condon Dominates Faceoff Circle, Murphy Scores Six, No. 15 Saints Defeat Western New England 15-8

Judge Murphy tallied six goals and added an assist and Cam Croasdaile tallied a hat trick to lead the No. 15 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 15-8 win over Western New England on Sunday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.

Murphy finished with seven points, three ground balls, and one caused turnover, while Ben Hutchinson recorded two goals and two assists. Daniel Mahoney and Ted Wilson also scored a pair of goals in the win.

Paddy Condon dominated the faceoff circle, going 20-for-25 on the afternoon, and picked up a season-best 17 ground balls. Defensively, the Saints were led by Tripp Clark with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

After trading goals to start the game, the Saints scored three unanswered, including the second of the game from Croasdaile and back-to-back goals from Murphy to take a 4-1 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The Saints and the Golden Bears would go back-and-forth once again to start the second quarter, but Murphy's third goal of the game sparked a string of six unanswered goals that was capped off with a goal from Wilson to help build an 11-3 lead. In the string of six, the Saints scored three goals in the span of 39 seconds.

The Golden Bears rallied a bit, scoring three in the third quarter and the lone two goals of the fourth, but man-up goals from Mahoney and Wilson and goals from Murphy and Hutchinson sealed the win down the stretch.

"That was a good team win," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "Western New England is a well-coached and tough team that we love to compete against. Our faceoff unit was excellent today and that can be a real game changer on both ends of the field."

Jack Houlden led the Golden Bears with two goals and an assist, while Chris Catuosco picked up a team-best six ground balls.

Saints' goaltender Michael Marinello finished with six saves, while Carter Randall made 12 to start for the Golden Bears and Jonathon Salsbury made three in a relief effort.

The Saints outshot the Golden Bears 45-31, including 30-14 in shots on goal. SLU also converted a perfect 16-for-16 on the clear attempt and picked up 43 ground balls to WNE's 28. SLU also went 2-for-2 on the man up, while WNE finished 1-for-2.

St. Lawrence improved to 3-0 on the season, while WNE fell to 1-1.

The Saints will travel to St. John Fisher for a 2 p.m. matchup against the Cardinals on Saturday, March 2.
