With the match at 4-4,
Aidan Baracao delivered a clutch win in singles to lift the St. Lawrence University men's tennis team to a 5-4 win over Skidmore on Sunday evening in the Newell Field House.
St. Lawrence improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds fell to 0-1.
The win was the first for the Scarlet and Brown over Skidmore since the 2009-10 season when the Saints beat the Thoroughbreds twice in one year.
St. Lawrence got off to a great start taking a 2-1 lead in doubles. At number one,
Adam Heilbronner and
Broderick Pinto battled to a tight 8-7 (7-5) win over Harrison Gradin and Yuval Goodman. Then at three,
Edvin Strandberg and
John Hill-Edgar took down Kyle Lundberg and Louis Bourn 8-5.
In singles play, Heilbronner and Goodman would do battle once again in the one spot. Heilbronner would take another close win 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-1) for his second win of the day.
At number five, Hill-Edgar took on Lundberg and came away with his second win of the day 7-5, 7-5.
The match came down to six where Baracao and Adel Aissaoui would play for the victory. Baracao came out swinging, winning the opening match 6-4, but would drop the second 6-2 bringing the match to the third set. The sophomore came up clutch rolling to a 6-1 win to take the match for the Scarlet and Brown.
The Saints will look to keep the momentum rolling next week when the team hosts Ithaca in a 10 a.m. match on Saturday, March 2.
