Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Murphy Records Eight Points, Strong First Half Powers No. 15 Saints to Win Over Potsdam

A well-rounded attack and a strong first quarter led the No. 15 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to an 18-5 win over SUNY Potsdam at North Country Field on Thursday afternoon.

Judge Murphy tallied four goals and four assists on the day for eight points, while John Mahoney finished with three goals and an assist and Cam Croasdaile added three goals. Ted Wilson also scored twice for the Scarlet and Brown, while the Saints also saw goals from Brian Souza, Daniel Mahoney, Ben Kniskern, Carter Flanagan, Sean Wiseman and Will Harris.

Paddy Condon controlled the faceoff circle, going 12-for-16 and picking up a team-high seven ground balls, while Daniel Mahoney, Souza, Rhett Palmer, Tripp Clark and Sam Smith all caused two turnovers.

The Saints blanked the Bears to start, shutting them out 8-0 after the first quarter.

Kniskern and Wilson would score the first two goals of the second quarter, both off passes from Daniel Mahoney. The Bears saw their first goal of the off the stick of Owen Walsh and the Bears scored three unanswered. Murphy tallied back-to-back goals to end the second quarter and helped the Saints build a 12-3 lead at halftime.

The Bears scored the first two out of the break, but that would be the end of the scoring, as the Scarlet and Brown scored six unanswered to seal the win, including a man-up tally from Daniel Mahoney and a first career goal for Harris.

"That was a solid effort tonight in all areas," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "I was pleased with the increased production from the midfield and I thought it was a stingy defensive effort as well. We will need to have a couple of good days of preparation for our next opponent on Sunday."

Owen Walsh led the Bears with two goals and an assist, while Peyton Walsh, Cobie Cree and Tyler Gould all scored once.

All three Saints' goaltenders saw time in net against the Bears. Michael Marinello recorded the win with eight saves, while Andrew Vona finished with three. Saka Thompson made 11 saves in a relief effort for SUNY Potsdam.

The Saints finished with a 47-31 advantage in shots, including 31-16 in shots on goal. SLU also picked up 40 ground balls to Potsdam's 27, went 1-for-2 on man-up opportunities, and killed off all three of the Bears' man-up opportunities.

With the win, the Saints improved to 2-0, while Potsdam suffered the loss in their season opener at 0-1.

St. Lawrence will host Western New England on Sunday, February 25 at 1 p.m.
