Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joey Roiger

Union Uses Late Comeback to Upset St. Lawrence

The Union men's basketball team used a late 7-0 run to defeat the St. Lawrence Saints 67-65 on senior day Saturday afternoon in Schenectady.

With the loss, the Saints split the weekend after defeating Ithaca Friday night. The Saints went 1-1 against Union this season after defeating the Garnet Chargers 66-45 at home in their first matchup. St. Lawrence and Hobart are now tied for second place in the Liberty League standings after Hobart suffered a loss at Bard.

RPI is now in sole possession of first place holding a one-game lead over both the Saints and Statesmen with each team with two games remaining in the regular season.

The first half was action packed with back-and-forth scoring. While the Saints held the lead for the majority of the half, but their largest lead was only five. The Scarlet and Brown found themselves leading 35-34 at the half with Andrew Cowan leading the team with 10 points at the break backed by 7-12 shooting from the 3-point arc as a team.

The beginning of the second half was much of the same, with the Saints holding a lead but by no more than a one to three possessions. They opened up a 49-41 lead with 14:10 to go but Union slowly closed that gap to 51-49 at the 9:26 mark.

With the Saints holding a narrow 65-64 with one minute remaining, the Saints turned the ball over giving it back to the Garnet Chargers with 32 seconds remaining, and a chance for them to grab their first lead since 2-0.

Union got the ball to the high post and then kicked it out to the opposite baseline for an open three that hit nothing but net. With the Saints now trailing 65-67 and under 20 seconds left, Gavin McCauley drove the lane drawing a shooting foul with seven seconds to play.

The Junior from Lowville, N.Y.  missed both shots, then the Garnet Chargers secured the rebound and the Saints fouled with four seconds to go. Union failed to convert on the one-and-one giving the ball back to the Saints under Unions' basket. Down two points, the Scarlet and Brown inbounded the ball to Syroka. As he crossed half court, the Senior from Toledo, Ohio saw a wide open Gavin Macaulay in the corner. The senior set up Macaulay but the last second three pointer was long, as the Saints were upset on the road.

"We are at that time of year where you need to finish," Saints head coach Chris Downs said after the game. "You need to finish shots, you need to finish defensive stops, and you need to finish games. You either finish, or you go home. Everything we have worked for is still ahead of us."

The Saints held a 65-60 lead with 2:30 left but failed to score the remainder of the game. They held the lead for 37 minutes of the game. Andrew Cowan led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds. Adam Dudzinski and Aiden Macaulay had 14 and ten points respectively while Trey Syroka tallied five assists.

The Saints will head home to play Skidmore Friday and RPI Saturday in their final two games before Liberty League playoffs.
