Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 11 Saints Shutout Dartmouth 2-0; Close Semester with Weekend Sweep

Tori Verbeek and Sarah Thompson scored, while Emma-Sofie Nordström recorded her fourth shutout of the season, as the No. 11 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team completed the weekend sweep with a 2-0 win over Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.

After the weekend sweep, the Saints head into holiday break at 11-5-4 overall and 5-1-2 in ECAC play, while Dartmouth fell to 0-14-0 and 0-10-0, respectively.

With just about 15 seconds remaining in the first and from the bottom of the right circle, Aly McLeod, Sarah Marchand and Verbeek completed a nice tic-tac-toe play to put the Saints on the board with Verbeek's fourth of the season on the power play.

After the first period, the Saints led 9-2 in shots on goal and 1-0 on the scoreboard.

Thompson increased St. Lawrence's lead to 2-0 as she redirected a shot from the right circle by Abby Hustler, beating Dartmouth goaltender Michaela Hesová for the two-goal spread. Taylor Lum also assisted on the play.

After the second frame, the Saints led 19-6 in shots on goal.

With 2:15 to play in the third, Dartmouth pulled Hesová for the extra attacker, but the third period remained scoreless sealing the shutout win for SLU.

"It was a great way to end the semester for our team," said head coach Chris Wells. "We really had a strong effort all game long, with excellent puck support and I felt our transition game created a good number of chances. Our power play hasn't had a lot of opportunities lately and it was solid this weekend and had a huge goal to end the first."

Nordström stopped 14 shots to complete her fourth shutout of the season and 11th career shutout, which ranks her seventh in the Saints record book.

Hesová finished with 26 saves for the Big Green.

St. Lawrence finished 1-for-2 on the power play and finished with a 28-14 advantage in shots on goal, while Dartmouth went 0-for-2.

"This is always a great time of year and we are able to head into the break with some confidence and momentum," Wells added. "We look forward to seeing all of our fans in the second half of ECAC play!"

The Saints will be back in action in January, as they open the new year at Appleton Arena, hosting Colgate and Cornell on January 3-4, 2025.
