The Skidmore Thoroughbreds outlasted the St. Lawrence women's basketball team 63-38 Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Saints move to 6-2 on the year, with a 1-2 mark early in the Liberty League schedule.
"Despite being handled on the scoreboard, we did a lot of things correctly today and played much harder than we did yesterday," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "Our defense was very solid, and we held them to 29% shooting. We didn't rebound well on that end but that has been a weakness of ours all year and something we continue to work on. On the offensive end we had problems with their press. I felt we attacked their matchup zone pretty well, but we just couldn't make shots at the rate we needed to. We haven't found the consistency we are looking for in our shooting this year. We are getting wide open shots from the arc, but going 2 for 30 is just not going to get it done.
"Despite a tough weekend, I am pleased with the pre-break schedule," he said. We are 6-2 and learning with a very young squad."
In a defensive first quarter, the Saints never led, but Skidmore couldn't get more than a one possession lead. Two free throws from
Jackie Malley tied the game at 10 with 1:49 left in the first quarter, but a quick basket from the Thoroughbreds gave Skidmore a 12-10 advantage which was the score the quarter ended with.
In the second, the Skidmore defense flustered the Saints and the Thoroughbreds were quickly doubling St. Lawrence 20-10 a few minutes in. In the middle part of the quarter, the Scarlet and Brown got seven points quickly with baskets from
Mason Baker-Schlendering, Desiree Dubois and a three-pointer from
Annie Perry to make the game 21-17 with 4:33 left in the first half. Despite this small spurt from the Saints, the Thoroughbreds dominated the remaining time, scoring 13 points and ballooning their lead up to 34-18 at the break.
The Saints' defense was better in the third quarter, only allowing 11 points, but they couldn't get any runs going and only got as close as 12 on a couple of occasions. The Thoroughbreds went into the fourth stanza with a 45-30 lead. Skidmore opened the fourth quarter scoring nine straight points and the Saints eventually fell 63-38.
St. Lawrence was led by
Elizabeth Flynn, who had seven points, seven rebounds, and three assists, leading the team in all three categories while Baker-Schlendering had six points and six rebounds in her first collegiate start.
The Saints will have the rest of the calendar year off and will next be in action on Saturday, January 4 where they will travel downstate to take on the Hamilton Continentals in a non-conference matchup.
