Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Joey Roiger '25

Saints Drop High-Scoring Home Contest to Rensselaer in First Loss of 2024-25

Elizabeth Flynn had another double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, but the St. Lawrence women's basketball team fell to the Rensselaer Engineers in a high-scoring affair  Friday night in Burkman Gymnasium.

The game marks the first loss for the Saints this season, as they are now 6-1 with an even 1-1 record in Liberty League play.

"RPI deserved to win this game tonight and we did not deserve it," said St. Lawrence coach Dan Roiger. "Our defense has been a strength this year, but tonight it was bad. We never established a help side, and got beat on layups all night long while they went 1-6 from the arc, and on offense we failed to shoot the ball.  After starting the game 5-10, we finished 17-67 and that is not winning basketball. We played poorly on both ends, and in the Liberty League that costs you the opportunity to get a win. No time to feel sorry for ourselves; we play a very good Skidmore team tomorrow."

Despite the Saints giving up the first points of the game, they went on a 14-0 run in just over three minutes to take a double-figure lead early. Flynn had seven points over this span. However, over the middle part of the quarter, the Engineers got back into the game and eventually tied it at 16 with 2:46 left in the first quarter. Flynn got two more points late to get to 10 in the first quarter, but the Saints trailed 19-18 after the first ten minutes.

In the first part of the second quarter, the Saints scored seven straight thanks to a jumper by Mason Baker-Schlendering, and back-to-back threes from Margaret Dougher and Jackie Malley and took a 28-21 lead with six minutes remaining in the half. From that point, St. Lawrence only managed one more point before the break with the halftime score at 35-29 in favor of the Engineers. Flynn led the way with 11 points at the half.

In the third quarter, the Saints offense was much better and with two free throws from Flynn, they were able to tie the game at 41 with five minutes remaining but then RPI went on an 8-0 run after this. The two teams matched each other late and a buzzer-beating shot at the end of the quarter by McHarney got the Saints to within five points 52-47.

The Saints got within two points, 56-54 a few minutes into the fourth quarter with a three-pointer from Malley, but the Engineers offense was too much for the Saints after that. After the Malley three, Rensselaer scored seven straight and then maintained a two-possession lead for the remainder of the game, becoming the first team to defeat the Saints on the year.

Malley was second on the team with 17 points and Baker-Schlendering was in double-figures with a career-high ten points and also contributed with seven rebounds.

The Saints will look to bounce back tomorrow, December 7 in a matchup against the Skidmore Thoroughbreds at 2 p.m.
