Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pijpers' Golden Goal Sends Men's Soccer to the Liberty League Title Match

Sophomore Henry Brown scored his 12th goal of the season in the nick of time to tie the game with less than two minutes in the contest, and fifth-year Sam Pijpers called game in the second overtime period as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team defeated Skidmore in a dramatic 2-1 Liberty League Semifinal match on Friday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

St. Lawrence, who improved to 9-2-6, and 9-0-6 in their last 15 matches, advance to Sunday's Liberty League Championship game with the victory, while Skidmore sees their season end at 6-4-7.

"I've said it repeatedly, this group of players finds a way to get it done!" said head coach Mike Toshack "And when I say players, I mean everyone on the roster, who does their part every day. Without this, it is impossible to win matches of this nature! The team looks forward to going to Vassar for the league championship game."

The beginning of this contest was a tactician's dream, with both teams playing solid in their formations. St. Lawrence, playing in their first postseason contest, got the first shot away, as Max Mogul sailed a shot wide of the target. Skidmore would counter with a less-than-threatening effort that was snared by George Charalambous.

There weren't many more shots to be found the rest of the way in the first half, but the ones that found the woodwork were stopped by Will Devall and Charalambous.

Things began to open up in the second half, especially on the St. Lawrence side. Pijpers and Brown had chances in the opening 12 minutes of play with Pijpers missing left and Brown's effort stymied by a diving effort from Devall.

It looked as if the Saints were going to get a golden chance in the contest when Brown was shouldered to the pitch in the Skidmore box, but the call was missed as both teams went back to their games.

The game cruised into the 84th minute when the draw was broken. A foul call at the midfield line led to a Thoroughbred free kick, which Max Heberlein took. The wind at Sandy MacAllaster Field carried the kick farther than expected and it went off the fingertips of Charalambous. Colin Goodhines was the beneficiary on the doorstep, tapping the ball home to take the late lead.

St. Lawrence refused to quit pushing the ball up the field. The Scarlet and Brown's effort paid off as they earned a free kick in dangerous territory when Mogul's right-wing run was taken down. Nicholas Petrone took the corner for the Saints and found the head of Brown, who knocked the ball in to tie the game with 1:56 on the clock.

Brown's 12th tally of the season moved him into a tie for sixth in the Saints' record book for goals in a season alongside Brendan Gorman '12, and Dana Hollingsworth '77.

The game went into extra time where neither team was able to get a good look at the other team's respective frame. As a result, the game went into a second overtime period with the threat of penalty kicks looking more and more likely.

That would be unnecessary however as Dennis Argueta made a great play to help the Saints clinch the game in the 106th minute. The sophomore midfielder carried the ball in towards the box and found Pijpers. The fifth-year hoisted the golden goal to the top left of the goal and in to send Sandy MacAllaster Field into bedlam, and the Scarlet and Brown into the title match on Sunday.

Charalambous came up big stopping four shots in the St. Lawrence goal, while Devall was only able to come up with two of the four, he faced.

St. Lawrence will make the trek down to Vassar College where the Saints will take part in the Championship Game on Sunday afternoon. A time for the game has yet to be announced for the contest.
