Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Charalambous Makes 11 Saves in 0-0 Liberty League Final; Men's Soccer Falls 4-3 in PK's

Senior goalkeeper George Charalambous made a career-high 11 saves in the woodwork and earned his eighth clean sheet of the year, but after a 0-0 draw, the game came down to penalty kicks where the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team fell 4-3 to the Vassar Brewers on Sunday afternoon in the Liberty League Championship game at Gordon Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

With the result, St. Lawrence went to 9-2-7, while Vassar moved to 12-3-3 and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Saints' fate will be in the hands of the NCAA Tournament selection committee, who will reveal the bracket in tomorrow's selection show at 1:30 p.m. If St. Lawrence's season is to end, it will be on a 16-game unbeaten streak that dates back to September 1 (9-0-7) after not falling to a Liberty League opponent in 11 matches (6-0-5).

The title game, a thriller from the start, saw both teams threaten early in the contest. The first two shots on the frame were taken by Nicholas Petrone and Baker Diaz, but Jacob Raphan was on his game early. Charalambous and the Scarlet and Brown defense were equally up to the task fending off several shots and stopping a bid from Mauricio Mejia in the 22nd minute.

The Saints made a late push in the first half with looks by Petrone and Henry Brown, but the game would go to the half even at 0-0.

The Brewers came out in the second half with a vengeance getting off 12 shot attempts in the first 11 minutes. Charalambous was a star in the barrage making three saves. The Saints' backline was just as tremendous as they were credited with a pair of team saves that kept the game even.

St. Lawrence came out of the defensive stand with a great chance of their own as Max Mogul made a run down the right wing. The forward got a shot on the frame but was stopped at the bottom right by Raphan.

Vassar went back to work, and again, Charalambous and the backline came up huge with a save by the senior and another two team saves on threatening efforts.

Things would settle down in the final 20 minutes and the Saints were able to establish their formation. Sam Pijpers and Gustav Scheibler both had shots that missed the frame, but moments later the Brewers goalkeeper had some heroic efforts of his own. Pijpers, Mogul, and Brown all had chances to score in a short stretch, but the game somehow held at 0-0 as the game eventually moved into overtime.

The Scarlet and Brown fended off a pair of early corner kicks to start the first overtime to earn two of their own. That pressure led to three shot attempts from the Saints, the first of which was stopped off the foot of Mogul while the other two sailed high. Pijpers then had the best chance of the two teams in the second overtime period but was stymied as the game went to penalty kicks.

Vassar, who started the penalty kicks, scored on their first three efforts, while Brown and Pijpers followed suit in between the kicks. A save by Raphan put the Brewers in an advantageous spot as they took a 4-2 lead. Petrone came up clutch with a goal, and Charalambous stopped a shot of his own as the game was on the line at 4-3. The Saints' final kick sailed left of the goal and the Brewers would take the title.

Two of the league's best goalkeepers, Charalambous and Raphan were the stars of the match making 11 and 10 saves respectively.

The eyes of St. Lawrence will be on tomorrow's selection show where they will learn their fate at 1:30 p.m. The selection show can be found on NCAA.com.
