Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Naaykens Tallies Three Points in 4-0 Exhibition Win over Simon Fraser

Greg Lapointe, Nicholas Beneteau, and Ty Naaykens combined for four goals, while Mason Kucenski, Cameron Smith, Jack Wieneke, and Dominic Basse combined for 26 saves and a shutout as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team defeated Simon Fraser 4-0 in exhibition play on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

St. Lawrence's offense was hopping from the jump registering 17 shots in the first period of the contest.

Jesse Makaj was up to the task in the first three-quarters of the period but let up two goals to close out the frame.

Naaykens got things going at the 16:31 mark firing a shot on goal that was stopped by the netminder. Lapointe picked up the rebound, fired a shot that was saved, then tapped in the goal to make it 1-0.

In the final minute of the third, Lapointe struck again for St. Lawrence. Tomáš Mazura forced a Red Leaf turnover deep in the offensive zone and fed a pass to Lapointe at the point. The senior ripped a shot past Makaj to claim the 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Kucenski, who played the opening 20 minutes stopped six shots in the period.

The lead was increased early in the second period by the Saints, who scored at the 4:56 mark. Naaykens was a playmaker once again finding Beneteau in the slot with plenty of room. The first-year roofed a shot into the top shelf making it a 3-0 advantage.

Naaykens, who already had two assists, decided it was his turn to put the puck in the net as he gathered a Mazura pass by way of Jake Lammens, skated across the goal mouth, and tucked in a backhand shot to take a 4-0 lead ahead of the second intermission.

Smith and Wieneke combined to make seven saves in the middle frame for the Scarlet and Brown.

The Saints poured on another 18 shots in the third, but it ended up being Basse who would steal the show.

Simon Fraser had 13 shots of their own in the third period, much of which came late. Armed with a 5-on-3, the Red Leafs attacked the St. Lawrence goal. Basse slammed the door on Simon Fraser saving everything that came his way to preserve the combined shutout.

Following the 13 saves from Kucenski, Smith, and Wieneke, Basse made 13 of his own to close the contest. Makaj was busy in the opposing goal making 45 saves on 49 shots.

St. Lawrence will now rest and prepare for their ECAC opening games next weekend when the team heads to Union on Friday and RPI on Saturday for a pair of contests.
