Sophomore goaltender
Mason Kucenski made 29 saves for the Saints, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team would fall 4-0 to Union on Friday night in Schenectady, N.Y.
The Saints fell to 4-6-0 in the loss and 0-1-0 in the ECAC, while the Garnet Chargers improved to 7-2-1, and 3-0-0 in the league.
Kucenski was tested early for the Scarlet and Brown as he was tasked with making five saves in the first minute and 25 seconds of play. The sophomore stood tall keeping Union at bay and the score even.Â
St. Lawrence countered with shots from
Ty Naaykens,
Isaac Tremblay, and
Felikss Gavars but were unable to find twine on Kyle Chauvette.
The two goaltenders would duel back-and-forth until later in the first period with the Garnet Chargers on the power play. During the kill, Kucenski stopped a shot from Brandon Buhr and covered the puck. The officials allowed the play to continue, and Drew Sutton was able to dig the puck out from underneath the goaltender and put it in the net to take the lead.
The Scarlet and Brown came out firing in the middle frame getting eight of the first nine shot attempts between the two teams. The offensive was partially thanks to the Saints' first power play of the game. The advantage was short lived however as a St. Lawrence forward was tagged for a penalty after being buried into the Union goal and Chauvette tripped on the skater.
The 4-on-4 and shortened penalty kill went by the way side, but the Garnet Chargers ended up doubling their lead nine minutes and four seconds into the period off a Caden Villegas one-timer.
To start the third period, the Saints had a trio of great looks on Chauvette, all of which came from the stick of Gavars. The junior forward ripped two shots off the post, and his third shot was snared by the Garnet Charger goaltender to end the threat.
Following the television timeout, with St. Lawrence on the power play, a bad break for the Saints resulted in a 3-0 deficit. Following a shot from
Jan Olenginski, which narrowly missed the frame, the puck was chipped out by a Union penalty killer and into the Garnet Charger bench. The puck hit off the players in the bench, but was not called out of play, which allowed Carter Korpi to carry the puck into the zone and score to triple their lead.
The Scarlet and Brown poured six shots on to the opposing goal with the extra-attacker on, but Union would score on the empty net to put the game away.
Kucenski finished with 29 saves, while Chauvette made 19 in the home goal.
The Saints will be back in action tomorrow when the team heads to Troy, N.Y. to take on RPI in a 7 p.m. puck drop.
