Elizabeth Flynn had a 15-13-4 statline, including a double-double in the first half to push the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team past the Wellesley Blue 63-40 in the opening game of the Westfield Gas and Electric Tip-Off Tournament.
The Saints remain undefeated for the season, now holding a 5-0 record after the Friday night win in Westfield, Mass.
"A nice win for the team tonight anchored by a solid defensive effort," said St. Lawrence head coach
Dan Roiger. "We did a great job defending their offense and a good job on the boards overall. We got some solid play from our bench tonight and that helped us spread some minutes out for our first back to back games of the year."
The two teams started the game evenly, but the Saints jumped out to a 13-7 lead with 5:34 left in the first off back-to-back layups from Flynn. The Blue got within two points with a couple minutes to go in the quarter but a late three from
Norah Niesz gave the Saints an 18-13 lead after one
In the second quarter, the Saints shined on both ends of the court.
KJ Greenhalgh started it with a steal and a layup at the other end, and with 6:12 left in the half, Flynn drained a three-pointer to put the Scarlet and Brown up double digits 27-17. At halftime, the Saints held a 33-19 lead, outscoring the Blue 15-6 in the second quarter. Flynn had 11 points and 11 rebounds at the half and
Jackie Malley had seven points.
The strong defense from the Saints continued in the opening minutes of the third quarter, forcing Wellesley to drain the shot clock and attempt contested shots on nearly every possession. This quarter was low scoring, with neither both teams going scoreless for a stretch of three-and-a-half minutes midway through. The two teams matched each other in points for the most part, but the Blue got the score as close as 40-29 with just over two minutes remaining in the third. However two free throws from Flynn and a layup by
Mason Baker-Schlendering allowed the Saints to lead 44-29 at the end of the third.
In the fourth, with St. Lawrence leading 46-33, the Saints went on a 12-0 run to lead by 25.
Molly Keaveney had five points in this span and the Saints took care of the victory a few minutes later.
This was Flynn's third double-double of the season.

Caelan McHarney was the team leader with five assists and
Hannah Van Dyke contributed with six rebounds to place second on the team in that category.
With the win, the Saints advance to the tournament's championship game on Saturday, November 23, where they will face host Westfield State at 2 p.m.
