Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Brown Scores His 11th of the Year; Men's Soccer Settles for 2-2 Draw With Hobart

Sophomore striker Henry Brown scored his 11th goal of the season, and the Saints got an own goal to go their way late as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games in a 2-2 tie with Hobart on Senior Day at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

St. Lawrence moved to 8-2-6 on the year with the draw and finished the regular season unbeaten in Liberty league play with a 5-0-4 record and 19 points. Despite this, the Saints will have to settle for second place in the regular season standings after Vassar earned their 20th league point with their win over RIT.

"Very proud of our team as they continue to show an amazing resilience and never-say-die attitude," said Mike Toshack "Although the only team without a loss, we came up one point shy of another regular season Championship. We are all excited to host a Liberty league semifinal next Friday."

Hobart caught a break early in the decisive contest scoring in the second minute of the match. The Statesmen found themselves with an early corner kick after a defender slipped on the pitch. The corner was sent in and the initial shot from Will Slayton was stopped. The rebound, however, came to the foot of Brady Leitner, who scored to make it 1-0.

The Statesmen, who are one of the lower-scoring teams in the league, decided to fall back into a shell and take on the St. Lawrence attack.

St. Lawrence got to work with the deficit getting a good look from Brown that was saved. It looked like the Saints had tied the game on the play as the shot was bounced out to Nicholas Petrone, who buried the ball into the back of the net. The play was called back due to a questionable offside call and the game would remain at 1-0.

Sam Pijpers nearly equalized the game on three occasions in the following 20 minutes of play. His first two shots were stopped by Thomas Chyzowych, while his third was stopped by a team save to keep the fifth-year off the board.

The Saints continued to push but the game would go into the half at 1-0.

St. Lawrence continued to press Hobart, who was reeling and loading their box in an attempt to keep the Saints off the board. Brown and Ryan Campbell each had chances in the opening nine minutes but couldn't find the twine.

Hobart's defensive structure and time-wasting antics finally caught up with them in the 69th minute when the Scarlet and Brown tied the contest. Pijpers started the play passing off to Mogul on the wing. The forward beat a defender and sent a ball into Brown, who scored his 11th of the season to make it a 1-1 game.

The goal moves Brown into a tie for 8th in the men's soccer history book for goals in a season alongside Eric Harms '02, and Marvin Sibanda '23, who accomplished the feat twice.

The tied contest would last another 11 minutes until a defensive lapse led to another Hobart goal making it 2-1.

St. Lawrence immediately countered and was able to knot the game five minutes later in the 86th minute.  Mogul once again went to work on the right wing and sent a cross intended for Brown. As the saying goes, 'ball don't lie', as the Saints got payback for the earlier disallowed goal when a Hobart defender made a bad play and knocked the ball into his own goal to make it 2-2.

Brown had a shot at the buzzer to win the league, but the shot never threatened as it sailed out wide.

George Charalambous made five saves in the effort, while Chyzowych made seven in the other frame.

St. Lawrence dominated in shot attempts 20-10 and led 9-7 in shots on frame. St. Lawrence held the heavy possession advantage and had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Saints earned a bye in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament with the second-place finish and will await their opponent for the Semifinals which will be played at Sandy MacAllaster Field next Friday afternoon.
