Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Move to 3-0 with 14-Point Win Over Clarkson

Caelan McHarney had 11 points as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team moved to 3-0 on the season with a 58-44 victory over Clarkson on Saturday in Canton, N.Y.

"It was a nice team win today. We had a lot of contributions up and down the lineup and we showed some nice growth from the first two games," said head coach Dan Roiger. "They worked hard this week to fix some issues on offense and in the first half we played well. Second half we still played well but didn't shoot it well. Had we shot well, we would have put up some good points."

"Our defense was spectacular today. It was really intense with few breakdowns throughout. We made them earn points at the half court level and I really liked our defensive field goal percentage, holding them to under 30 per cent. They run some sets that can be difficult to defend and our players were pretty solid in taking those looks away. Great job by Caelan today attacking the rim with a great field goal percentage and five assists.  And kudos to Hannah and Norah for holding one of the top scorers in the league to just 3-13 field goals."

The Golden Knights got the very first point of the game, but the Saints proceeded to score the next 12 points. Three pointers by Flynn and Annie Perry forced an early timeout from Clarkson four minutes into the first quarter. Clarkson was able to halt the run, but the Saints continued to get things done offensively and held a 21-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Saints offense was a tad bit quiet early,  but they midway through the quarter, leading 25-17, the Saints went on a 10-0 run led by McHarney who had five points in this span while Malley connected on a three-pointer as well and the Saints were in total control up 35-17.

Josie Cancro and Flynn both scored in the final minute as the Saints were nearly doubling the Golden Knights 39-20. McHarney had nine points heading into the break, Flynn had eight, and the Saints as a team were 6-13 from beyond the arc.

The second half saw the Saints maintain their lead for the first portion of the third quarter, as Flynn laid one up and in to give the Saints a 21-point lead 12 seconds into the frame, their largest lead of the game. They remained in and around that lead length for the rest of the quarter.

Clarkson put a dent in the St. Lawrence advantage at the beginning of the fourth quarter, with an 11-0 run, cutting the advantage down to 10 as the clock began to run out. However, the Saints worked their lead back up to 12 and then McHarney hit a turnaround jumper with 3:14 left to make the lead 14 again. The Saints cruised from there and walked away with their third win of the season.

It's a quick turnaround for the Scarlet and Brown, as they now head to Plattsburgh state to resume non-conference play Tuesday, November 19.
