Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 7 Saints Put Up Six Goals, Down Princeton for ECAC Opening Win

Taylor Lum scored two goals, while Abby Hehl tallied a goal and an assist, as the seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team opened their ECAC Hockey conference schedule with a 6-2 win over Princeton on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.

With the win, the Saints improved to 7-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play, while the Tigers fell to 2-3-0 and 0-3-0, respectively.

Lum put the Scarlet and Brown up early, just a minute and 29 seconds into play. An initial shot from Claire Tyo was stopped by Princeton goaltender Taylor Hyland, Lum capitalized on a big rebound with the backhanded shot for the 1-0 early lead.

Just about 10 minutes later, Hehl dished a beautiful pass from the corner to Katina Duscio, who came flying in on the left side for her first of the season to make it 2-0.

Princeton responded with just over three minutes to play, as Issy Wunder caught Mackenzie Alexander with a back door pass that beat Saints goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström, to make it 2-1.

After the first 20 minutes, St. Lawrence led 2-1 on the scoreboard and led 11-5 in shots on goal.

Princeton struck first in the second, as Wunder bought the Tigers back within one. She beat Nordström's glove with a short-side goal to make it 3-2.

With 8:17 to play in the second, Hehl threw a shot on net as she was falling down in the middle of the right circle. The shot slipped past Hyland to give the Saints back their two-goal advantage.

At the end of two periods of play, the Saints led 21-11 in shots on goal and 4-2 on the scoreboard.

Aly McLeod gave the Scarlet and Brown a three-goal spread, as she snagged the rebound in front of Hyland with three seconds left on the power play. McLeod's goal was her seventh of the season and extended her goal streak to four games.

Anna Segedi capped the scoring for the Saints, going coast-to-coast, beating Hyland with a laser of a shot from the slot.

"We got off to a great start and we were able to keep the pressure on the rest of the way," said head coach Chris Wells. "I felt we moved the puck very well and created a lot of our own chances. Balanced scoring from multiple lines is going to be a big key to success moving forward and we certainly got that tonight!"

"Tonight was a great effort from Hehl/Mulles/Verbeek line tonight. They worked each shift and were rewarded with two goals."

Nordström finished with 19 saves between the pipes for SLU, while Hyland stopped 25 and Jennifer Olnowich stopped five in a relief effort for the Tigers.

St. Lawrence finished with a 36-21 advantage in shots on goal and led 69-38 in total shots. The Saints also went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Princeton finished 0-for-3.

The Saints will head to New Haven, Conn. to take on No. 11 Quinnipiac, tomorrow, November 2 at 3 p.m.
