Halle Mules scored her first collegiate goal in Scarlet and Brown, but a third-period power play rush powered the No. 11 Quinnipiac Bobcats to a 3-1 win over the seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon in Hamden, Conn.
The first 20 minutes remained scoreless, but both teams saw their fair share of chances in the fast-paced period.
With about six minutes to play, Quinnipiac's Kendall Cooper was called for a hook and
Kennedy Wilson was granted a penalty shot, but Bobcat's goaltender Kaley Doyle made the stop keeping the game scoreless.
After the first period, St. Lawrence held a 12-11shots on goal advantage and Saints' netminder Emma-Sofie Nordström was up to the task.
The quick pace of the first period was carried over to the second, and with little to no whistles, both teams locked down on more of a defensive stance.
St. Lawrence continued to lead in shots on goal after two periods, 17-12.
With 12:32 to play in the third, Mules picked up a pass from
Tori Verbeek in the neutral zone, made a nifty inside-outside move, and scored her first career goal, giving St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later, the Bobcats tied things up as Makayla Watson sent a shot from the point through traffic making it 1-1.
At the 13:58 mark, Jenna Donohue put the Bobcats up 2-1, as she just beat Nordström five hole for the one-goal advantage.
With 1:41 to play, head coach
Chris Wells pulled Nordström for the extra attacker, as the Saints looked to force overtime.
The best chance in the final seconds came from
Aly McLeod with the backhand, but Doyle who, held on after the leg save with 19.2 to play.
Donohue scored her second of the game, winning the foot race for the empty net tally.
"Another battle down here at Quinnipiac," said Wells. "This was a game where we probably deserved a better fate. We have put together three very solid and consistent games in our last three outings. We can certainly take a lot of positives from our first road weekend in the league."
"We have also been getting great efforts up and down the lineup which is very encouraging. Mules has been knocking on the door and today she scored a beauty to put us up 1-0. Quinnipiac has a solid power play and they were able to capitalize on a couple calls down the stretch to get the win. Doyle was excellent in the net and made a few great stops on our solid chances."
Nordström finished with 23 saves for the Saints, while Doyle stopped 22 for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac closed things with a 26-23 edge in shots on goal and outshot the Saints 52-47 overall. The Saints weren't given any power play opportunities, but the Bobcats went 2-for-4 on the with the advantage.
St. Lawrence moved to 7-4-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in ECAC play, while Quinnipiac improved to 8-3-1 and 2-1-1.
"Every night in the league is going to be so competitive," Wells added. "To win you will need the effort, execution and a few good bounces. Makes for a great regular season!"
The Saints end their three-week road trek and return to Appleton Arena to host RPI and Union, November 8-9. Game times are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 3 p.m.
