Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Basse Stops 37; Men's Hockey Suffers 4-0 Loss at Stonehill

Graduate student goaltender Dominic Basse made 37 saves in his St. Lawrence debut, but two empty-net goals in a comeback effort sent the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 4-0 loss at Stonehill on Friday night.

The Saints fell to 4-5-0 with the loss, while the Skyhawks improved to 3-5-0.

The game began on a sour note when following a defensive zone turnover, Stonehill's Zach Nicolas scored off a one-timer 13 seconds into the game putting St. Lawrence down 1-0.

The Saints came back with shots from Isaac Tremblay and Reilly Connors in the following minutes but were stopped by Connor Androlewicz.

Basse did well to keep the Saints at 1-0 through the first half of the game and the Scarlet and Brown were able to gain some offensive ground. Jacob Bernadet and Tomáš Mazura each had a chance to tie up the game but couldn't cash in.

St. Lawrence once again laid on a push for a goal in the final two minutes hemming the Skyhawks in on their own end. The Saints registered seven shots, but none found their way home.

The Saints were armed with their first power play in the first half of the second period and despite some strong pressures were stymied on four occasions at the net mouth.

Instead, it was the Skyhawks that would double their lead three minutes after the power play off a goal from Dominick Campione to make it 2-0.

The Saints killed off a penalty of their own to begin the third to keep the game within striking distance and went on the man advantage for the second time with just over seven minutes to go in the contest.

Felikss Gavars had the best look of the bunch on the power play, but his shot was turned aside keeping the score at 2-0.

With the net empty and the extra skater on the ice for St. Lawrence, Stonehill was able to dump the puck in twice to inflate the score to 4-0.

Basse finished with 37 saves in the game, while Androlewicz came up with 24.

St. Lawrence will be back at Appleton Arena next weekend when the team hosts Simon Fraser for one game on Friday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m.
