Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Diaz Scores His First Career Goal in 1-1 Route 11 Derby Draw

Baker Diaz scored his first career goal for the Saints in the 32nd minute, but the Golden Knights matched with a goal in the 38th minute as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with Clarkson on Wednesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

St. Lawrence moved to 4-2-3 on the year and 1-0-2 in Liberty League play, while the Knight went to 5-0-6 and 1-0-3 in league play.

The Scarlet and Brown came out on a mission in the game getting the first four shot attempts. Grant Gilmer, Sam Pijpers, and Henry Brown saw their opening shots miss the frame, before Max Mogul finally hit the target. Carter Kladstrup came up with the save to keep it even.

Nicholas Petrone was able to get two more on goal and was joined by Owen Lillis. Kladstrup once again came up with saves, but that would come to an end.

Mogul possessed the ball in the 32nd minute and beat a defender to get into the box. The senior centered a pass to Diaz, who knocked the ball home to take the 1-0 lead in the match.

Dennis Argueta and Diaz nearly doubled the lead in the next couple of minutes, but it was Clarkson, who would strike next.

The Knights got their first shot on goal, albeit a weak effort, that was stopped by George Charalambous. The rain and the wet ball squeaked free and Daniel Medina took advantage to tie the game at 1-1.

The Saints remained in attack mode in the second half getting five of the first six shot attempts off. Petrone, Pijpers, and Lillis all got shots on Kladstrup but couldn't find twine. The first of which came from Petrone, who had a free kick from just outside the Clarkson box.

Clarkson and St. Lawrence made a push at the end to take the extra two league points but neither team was able to find the twine as the derby went to a draw.

Charalambous finished with four saves in the effort, while Kladstrup came up with eight in the opposing woodwork.

St. Lawrence dominated with an 18-11 shot advantage and a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The Saints also held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks as they dominated possession.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back on the pitch on Saturday at 3 p.m as the team travels to RIT to take on the Tigers.
