Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Diaz's Goal Lifts Men's Soccer to 1-0 Win at RIT

Sophomore Baker Diaz scored his second goal in as many games to send the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over RIT on Saturday night at RIT Turf Field in Rochester, N.Y.

St. Lawrence improved to 5-2-3 overall and 2-0-2 in Liberty League play, while the Tigers fell to 4-7-0 and 2-2-0 in league action.

The Scarlet and Brown extended their unbeaten streak to eight games (5-0-3) with the win and moved up to second place on the league table with the three points earned.

"The team dug deep again getting a well-earned three points," said head coach Mike Toshack "We are still an inch away from finishing the chances we created hitting two crossbars. We now look towards a tough game against Vassar next Friday."

Diaz, who was riding high after his first career goal early in the week, had the taste in his mouth early in the contest getting the games opening shot off for the Saints. The effort was followed by a near miss from Max Mogul and a shot off the crossbar from the foot of Ryan Campbell.

Diaz did not quit as at the 16-minute mark a free kick found him going to the net. Following the foul, Nicolas Petrone sent a perfect cross into the Tiger box where Diaz heads the ball up and past Jason Trapp to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.

RIT saw three of their own shots miss the woodwork in the minutes that followed the goal leaving Eric Edmonds with the next shot on frame. His effort was stopped by Trapp as the game went to half.

The Tigers finally got their first shots on goal, getting three in the first seven minutes of the second half. George Charalambous was sharp in goal stopping all three efforts.

There were only three more shots on goal the rest of the way with Petrone getting stopped for the Saints and Idriss Diallo and Daniel Gebura getting shut down by Charalambous.

Charalambous made five saves to earn his sixth clean sheet of the season, while Trapp stopped two of the three, he faced in the opposing goal.

St. Lawrence will head home and prepare for a crucial two-game weekend next week against top-of-the-league Vassar on Friday and Bard on Saturday.
