After going down 3-1 in the first 60 minutes of the match, a brace from
Henry Brown in the final 12 minutes of the contest, including the equalizer with 30 seconds left, sent the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-3 tie against No. 10 Vassar on Friday afternoon on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
St. Lawrence went to 5-2-4 on the year, 2-0-3 in the Liberty League, and brought their unbeaten streak to nine games. Vassar went to 9-2-1 with the result and 4-0-1 in league play.
"That was a good result against the number one ranked team in the region," said head coach
Mike Toshack "Two goals down in the second half, and the team was never dead. That mentality is what makes them so difficult to beat!"
The Saints got the scoring frenzy started in the 15
th minute of the contest. A
Max Mogul centering cross found a Brewer defender but was botched. The ball fell to
Sam Pijpers, who blasted the ball past the keeper to take the 1-0 lead.
Vassar would tie the contest late in the first half off a set piece. A questionable call out left of the Saints' box set up a free kick which Clifton Caden sent to the head of Otis Wildman and in to equalize the game ahead of the half.
The Brewers stayed hot in the second half scoring in the 58
th and 60
th minutes to take a commanding 3-1 lead.
Mogul and
Nicholas Petrone had chances to get back into the game but had their shots stopped by Jacob Raphan.
Things were looking shake for the Saints until the 79
th minute when the team broke through. A free kick from
Gustav Scheibler was settled by Brown, who passed off to Mogul. The senior slid a pass back to Brown, who sent a low shot past Raphan to give the Scarlet and Brown a heartbeat.
Things were looking bleak again for St. Lawrence as the team was unable to get another shot off until the final minute. With the last seconds ticking off the clock,
Ryan Campbell possessed the ball on the left wing and sent a ball to
Baker Diaz, who crossed it into the box. The pass found the foot of Brown, who laced a ball off the left post and in to tie the game with 29.5 ticks left.
The final 30 seconds would tick off and the Saints would walk away with the improbable result.
George Charalambous made eight saves for the Saints, while Raphan was only able to come up with three for the Brewers.
Vassar held the narrow 16-14 edge in shot attempts and 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
St. Lawrence will be back on Sandy tomorrow at 1 p.m. when the team welcomes the Bard Raptors to Canton for a conference tilt.
