Taylor Lum,
Aly McLeod and
Sarah Marchand scored to lead the No. 8 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team, but two third period goals lifted No. 4 Ohio State to a 5-3 win over the Saints on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
Just 3:20 into the first period, Riley Brengman put the Buckeyes on the board for the 1-0 lead.
The Saints responded well, as
Bella Parento sent a shot on goal from the blueline. The Shot was corralled by
Alexia Côté and
Claire Tyo, who found
Taylor Lum for her first goal of the season to tie the game up 1-1.
Ohio State scored two more on the Saints to take a 3-1 lead after the first period of play.
The Saints were once again up to the task, as
Abby Hustler sent a long range pass up ice to McLeod for the breakaway. McLeod beat Ohio State goaltender Hailey MacLeod glove side to bring the game within one.
Sarah Marchand tied things up for the Saints as she redirected a blue-line pass from
Kristina Bahl, beating a sliding MacLeod. McLeod also assisted on the play.
Jenna Buglioni scored her third goal of the weekend, as she fired a shot from the right circle past
Emma-Sofie Nordström to put the Buckeyes back in the lead with a 4-3 advantage.
With under a minute to go, the Saints pulled Nordström for the extra attacker, but with 35.2 seconds left in the third period, Jocelyn Amos tallied an empty netter for the 5-3 final.
"We gave another great effort today and took a big step in our season," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Being able to come back from 3-1 and get the game to 3-3 will be something we can build on. Lots of players gained confidence with their play this weekend that will be very beneficial in the near future!"
Nordström finished with 34 saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while MacLeod made 18 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State outshot the Saints 39-21. St. Lawrence went 1-for-5 on the powerplay, while Ohio State went 0-for-1.
The loss moved the Saints to 1-2-0 on the season, while Ohio State improved to 4-2-0.
St. Lawrence will face a quick turnaround, as they host Syracuse University on Tuesday, October 8 at 6 p.m.
