Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 4 Ohio State Edges No. 8 Saints in Overtime, 3-2

Abby Hustler scored in the second period to put the eighth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team up 2-1, but a tie after three periods sent the game to overtime, where No. 4 Ohio State claimed a 3-2 win on Friday night at Appleton Arena.

Graduate student Sarah Thompson struck first for the Saints, as she beat out two defenders and patiently waited for Ohio State goaltender Amanda Thiele to start to slide before beating her five hole for the 1-0 start. Hillary Sterling assisted on the play.

Just about five minutes later, Jenna Buglioni capitalized on a rebound after a slew of traffic in front of Saints' goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström to tie the game 1-1.

At the end of one, the Buckeyes led 14-4 in shots on goal.

Linemates Aly McLeod and Hustler would combine for another goal, as McLeod sent the puck up from the right circle just in time for Hustler to top the puck past Thiele for the 2-1 edge at 12:44 of the second frame.

After two periods of play, the Saints controlled the scoreboard, as Ohio State continued to build on their shot total with a 20-10 advantage.

Jocelyn Amos would get the credit for the game tying goal at 9:08 of the third period. Amos flew up the right-side boards and pulled back for the shot. The puck then trickled past Nordström and was originally waved off. After a review, the goal stuck, and the game was tied 2-2.

Buglioni scored her second of the game and the game winner, as the Buckeyes got the jump in overtime with the faceoff win and beat Nordström blocker side just seven seconds into the extra period.

"What another exciting game in Appleton," said head coach Chris Wells. "Picking right up where we left off from last year with our games here. OSU comes in waves in all areas on the ice. Their work ethic is as good as I've seen. We love playing in these games because this gives us a real good idea of things we need to work on and things we do well."

Nordström recorded 37 saves for the Saints, including 18 in the third period, while Thiele finished with 12 saves for the Buckeyes.

"It was a tremendous effort from our team, top to bottom," Wells added. "We will get a good rest and be ready for another big test tomorrow! It was a great crowd at Appleton again tonight. We can't say enough about the support we have received from the community and campus, thank you!"

Ohio State outshot the Saints 40-14. With the loss, the Saints fell to 1-1-0, while Ohio State moved to 3-2-0.

Both teams will meet back at Appleton tomorrow afternoon for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
