Araiza Acum-Santos had 10 kills and
Kori Meissner had seven digs, but the St. Lawrence volleyball team fell 3-0 to the Skidmore Thoroughbreds Friday night in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
"Unfortunately we continue to make several unforced errors and we lost the first contact battle," said head coach
Shelly Roiger.
Although the Saints stuck with the Thoroughbreds early in the opening set, Skidmore went on a 7-0 run to blow the game open and give themselves a 12-3 advantage early. The Thoroughbreds lead by as many as 15 points in the opening set.
After this, St. Lawrence was able to muster a 7-1 run to trim the deficit, highlighted by back-to-back service aces by
Lily Snide and two kills from Acum-Santos to get the set within single digits, 21-12. Despite their best efforts, Skidmore was able to halt the run and claimed victory in the first set 25-15.
In the second set, the Thoroughbreds jumped out to a 5-1 lead early and never allowed the Saints to respond. St. Lawrence was able to keep the Skidmore lead within four to seven points. Then, with the Thoroughbreds at a 13-7 lead, they scored five straight to go up 18-7. The Saints only got a few points after this, trailing by double digits the rest of the way and ultimately falling 25-10.
The beginning of the third set went much better for the Saints. A pair of kills from Acum-Santos and one from
Bridget Gammons gave the Scarlet and Brown an early 7-4 lead. Shortly after, the Saints earned a 10-6 lead off a service ace by Latam. Skidmore then rebounded, getting within one point 14-13, and then took the lead 18-17 a few points later, forcing the Saints to call a timeout.
The Thoroughbreds then dominated the later stages of the game. St. Lawrence only managed two more points, kills from Gammons and
Rachel Boudreau in their 25-19 defeat.
Boudreau and Gammons had four kills each. Gammons led the team in three blocks. Defensively,
Lily Snide recorded five digs to place second on the team in that category and also led the Saints with two service aces.
The Saints will have two more games Saturday, October 5 as they partake in the Bard Triad. The first game is against the hosting Bard Raptors at 1 p.m. immediately followed by a non-conference matchup against Rutgers-Newark at 3 p.m.
