King-Thurber Scores the Equalizer in 1-1 Derby Draw at Clarkson

Junior Madison King-Thurber struck pay dirt in the 51st minute to lead the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie versus Clarkson at Hantz Field on Tuesday night

St. Lawrence, who is unbeaten in their last four matches, moved to 8-6-2 on the year and 2-4-2 in Liberty League play, while the Knights stay below .500 at 5-6-4, and 2-3-3 in league action.

"That was a gritty comeback from the Saints," said head coach Sinead McSharry "I was proud of how we played our game in those final 55 minutes."

A water-logged turf field in Potsdam led to some uneven play early with both teams struggling to find their footing. Despite this, captains Alyvia Ronning, Mia Cence, along with Emma Casey all found the Clarkson goal with shots but were turned away by Molly DiCaprio.

The best effort of the bunch came from Cence, who collected the ball following a corner kick, but she was unable to find twine.

The Knights struggled to keep the ball down, firing five shots off-target in the first 39 minutes. The lone shot on goal came from Paige Ford, who never really threatened on her effort.

St. Lawrence continued to get balls to goal with shots from Ronning and King-Thurber but again was stymied by DiCaprio.

With the weather getting worse, the Knights found the scoreboard at an opportune time. Ford found the net once again but was stopped by Darcie McDonough. The ball came out to Emma Robinson, who hit the crossbar with her shot before collecting her rebound and burying a shot to make it 1-0.

The game was stopped after a lengthy delay immediately following the goal and would finally get going after around an hour indoors.

The Scarlet and Brown came out strong following the break and a key substitution led to a goal for the Saints. Lily Pleau, who came in after the delay countered following a McDonough save and made a run up the right wing. The winger swung a pass into King-Thurber, who collected the ball. The midfielder hoisted a shot over the outstretched DiCaprio to knot the game at 1-1.

The game turned physical after the goal with both teams struggling to get past the others' back line.

Grace Mochnal had a chance to take the lead in the 80th minute but was unable to find the goal as the game remained at 1-1.

The Golden Knights were able to get a trio of long shots towards the Saints' net in the final eight minutes, but the St. Lawrence back line forced all of the half-hearted efforts off target.

McDonough and DiCaprio both came up with five saves on six shots in the goalkeeper duel.

The teams also were tied on shots on goal as a result at 6-6. The Knights had a negligible 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

St. Lawrence will wrap up their regular season this Saturday at 2 p.m. when the team heads to Geneva, N.Y. to take on William Smith.
