Junior midfielder
Madison King-Thurber scored her fourth goal of the season in the 87
th minute, but it was too late as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team fell 4-1 to No. 11 William Smith in Geneva, N.Y.
With the loss, the Saints were eliminated from the Liberty League playoffs and see their season end at 8-7-2, with a 2-5-2 mark in league action.
"It was a hard-fought battle today against a very good team," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "We gave them the first two goals, and that made balancing the scoreline difficult. Overall, I'm proud of Team 45 for delivering on our short-term objectives this season. To our senior class - the vitality you brought this team throughout your career here is something I will forever be grateful for."
The Herons found the scoreboard first in the game in the 22
nd minute, but it did not come off the boot of a William Smith player. The goal was ruled an own goal to put the Herons up 1-0.
William Smith would take a 2-0 lead into the half when with 20 seconds left in the first half, the Herons were awarded a penalty kick. Ruth Hotaling scored on the effort to double the lead.
The Saints had a chance early in the second half to get a goal back off a shot from
Maille McMahon but her bid sailed over the woodwork.
Instead, it was the Herons who tripled their lead in the 61
st minute off a goal from Marissa Mastracco making it 3-0.
Later in the second half, the Herons saw a shot sail out right of the Saints goal, and the Scarlet and Brown quickly went out to counter. The Herons were sloppy with their clean sheet and allowed McMahon to find King-Thurber with some space in close. The junior buried her shot to cut into the lead.
William Smith would tack on another goal later to make it a 4-1 final.
McDonough made a career-high ten saves in her final game in Scarlet and Brown, while the Herons' Kirsten Nelson failed to come up with the lone shot she faced.
