First-year forward
Grant Gilmer scores his second goal of the year in the first half, but a late tally from the Cardinals sent the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw with Plattsburgh on Tuesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field in Canton, N.Y.
St. Lawrence went to 8-2-5 on the year with the result, while the Cardinals moved to 11-2-4. The Scarlet and Brown extended their unbeaten streak to 13 (8-0-5) with the tie as they head into their final regular season match.
"I felt bad for the guys a little hard done by a penalty kick given so late in the match," said head coach
Mike Toshack "Some very good performances today from players stepping in to do a job for the team. Again, we are a tough team to beat! We look forward to our last regular season game on Saturday against Hobart."
The Saints were in attack mode early and nearly scored in the first minute. Just 55 seconds into the game a ball was played into the Plattsburgh box where
Ryan Campbell got a shot on goal. The shot was stopped by Matthew D'Ippolito to keep the game even early.
Attempts from
Nicholas Petrone and Campbell followed but they could not find twine.
George Charalambous was strong in the woodwork and stopped a pair of great Cardinal looks. Santiago Vargas and Xavier Kamba each had great looks on goal but were stymied by the senior netminder.
St. Lawrence finally broke through in the 27
th minute to make it a 1-0 match.
Gustav Scheibler possessed the ball from the backline and launched a perfect long cross into the Plattsburgh box. On the receiving end was Gilmer, who headed the ball to give the Saints the lead.
Petrone and Plattsburgh's Bradyn Primus had the remaining two looks in the first half but were both shut down.
Parker Sinclair came in the game in relief of Charalambous to start the second half and didn't disappoint in his college debut. He made a pair of key saves in the opening 11 minutes to keep the game level.
The Saints nearly took a two-goal lead in the 63
rd minute when
Max Mogul had a free run towards the net. The senior got a shot off that was saved by the keeper. The senior was wiped out after the play in the box but there was no call on the pitch.
Following some back-and-forth play the Cardinals finally got the chance they were looking for. In the 87
th minute, the officials handed them a penalty kick following a play in which a Cardinal player grabbed a Saint by the head and then fell to the field which triggered the card. John Hayes was the beneficiary of the questionable call burying the kick to tie the game.
Neither team was able to make up any ground towards a win as the game went to 90.
Charalambous stopped three saves in 45 minutes of play, while Sinclair made six saves in his collegiate debut. D'Ippolito made six saves as well in the other goal.
St. Lawrence will host Hobart on Saturday in a 2 p.m. match to close out the regular season. The Scarlet and Brown, who will honor the Class of 2025 ahead of the game, will find out just how important the match will be on Wednesday after seeing Liberty League results. The Scarlet and Brown hold a four-point edge over Vassar for the regular season title and secure the top spot on the table with a win on Saturday. Â
