Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Saints Wrap Up Conference Season with 4-1 Loss to No. 22 Ithaca on Senior Day

The visiting Ithaca Bombers earned the game's first four goals en route to a 4-1 win over the St. Lawrence University field hockey team, as they wrapped up their conference play Sunday afternoon at Hall-Leet Stadium.

With the loss to No. 22 Ithaca, the Saints finish their conference season with a 2-5 record. They finish tied for the fifth and final Liberty League playoff spot, but are eliminated via a tiebreak. Their overall record sits at 5-10 heading into their final game of the season next week.

"While we hoped for a better result, we fought hard against a strong opponent today," said Fran Grembowicz, head coach of the Saints. "It was encouraging to see that kind of effort on display to send off our seniors."

The game featured a pre-game ceremony where three Saints seniors; Morgan Misiaszek, Suzanne L'Hommedieu and Cara Vredenburg; were honored for their contributions to the Scarlet and Brown.

The game began with decent chances at both ends of the field, but Audrey McMahon got the scoring started for Ithaca at 10:23. The Bombers then used their speed to score on a rush, with Catherine Papa making it 2-0 at 18:27. They'd add a third before half to make the score 3-0.

In the second, the Bombers would make it 4-0 on a goal by Natalie Descalso. That was the score until the three-minute mark of the fourth quarter, when Lily Gubbins deflected a long shot from Caroline Hamilton into the net to break the Bombers' combined shutout bid. The score would remain 4-1 until the final buzzer.

Cara Vredenburg made six saves between the pipes and received the loss, while Ithaca had Maeve Clark make two saves in three quarters before Abby Cannon played the fourth and allowed the Saints' goal.

St. Lawrence now welcomes another tough test in SUNY Cortland to the North County on Wednesday, October 30 for their final game of the regular season.
