Senior goalkeeper
Cara Vredenburg ended her St. Lawrence career by stopping 21 shots Wednesday afternoon as the St. Lawrence University field hockey team took a 5-1 loss against the No. 8 nationally-ranked Cortland Red Dragons at Hall-Leet Stadium.
The Saints finish their campaign with an overall record of 5-11. Conference action wrapped up last week, where the Saints fell to Ithaca and had their conference record finish at 2-5 on the season.
Head coach
Fran Grembowicz was proud of her team's effort, sticking with a team that will likely compete for a national championship.
"We battled with one of the top teams in the nation, holding them scoreless in the first quarter and for better parts of the second," said Grembowicz. "I am so proud of their energy and competitiveness. A special shoutout to our seniors
Morgan Misiaszek,
Suzanne L'Hommedieu and
Cara Vredenburg who were at the top of their game."
The game began with Cortland applying a ton of pressure but the Saints holding strong. Vredenburg was stellar in goal for the Scarlet and Brown, facing seven shots in the first quarter and stopping them all.
Early in the second half, Cortland got into some foul trouble and as a result, allowed the Saints to move the ball up field and create some offensive chances. None resulted in any shots on goal, however. The Red Dragons then finally found the back of the net at 26:38 when Keirra Ettere scored unassisted.
Two minutes later, Cortland was awarded a penalty stroke and made no mistake. Anna Healey was opportunistic, driving the ball past Vredenburg to make it 2-0. The game stayed that way through halftime.
In the second half, it looked like St. Lawrence had cut the lead in half on a quick-stop shot by
Lily Gubbins, but after a Cortland challenge the goal was reversed. The Red Dragons then went down the field shortly thereafter and made it 3-0 on Ettere's second of the game.
Sydney LeClair then got the Saints on the board permanently.
Hannah Gubbins took a pass from
Maja Helmer, and chipped it across the netfront to LeClair who tapped it into the net. That made the score 3-1.
Hanna Corrigan then added some insurance for the Red Dragons, scoring two goals of her own. That 5-1 score would hold until the game completed.
Cara Vredenburg was the star of the show at Hall-Leet Stadium, making 21 saves in the game as Cortland directed 38 shots toward the goal and hit the net with 26 of them. St. Lawrence registered five shots in the game. Cortland also won the penalty corner battle 16-4 over the Saints.
