Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Casey's Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to a 1-0 Senior Day Win Over Skidmore

Senior Emma Casey scored the game-winning goal for the Scarlet and Brown as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team defeated Skidmore 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

St. Lawrence improved to 8-6-1 overall with the win, and 2-4-1 in the Liberty League. The Thoroughbreds fell to 8-2-3, and 3-2-2 in league play with the loss.

The St. Lawrence University women's soccer program honored the eight members of the Class of 2025 before the contest in captains Mia Cence, Jenna Durkin, and Alyvia Ronning, along with Darcie McDonough, Maille McMahon, Grace Mochnal, Natalie Schock, and Emma Casey.

"This group of women has meant so much to me and this program," said head coach Sinead McSharry "It was nice to see them get a big final win on Sandy. One more game together."

The high-powered Thoroughbred team came out strong getting two shots onto McDonough but were turned aside by the senior. Kaitlyn Barton and Casey would return serve putting two shots on Sophia Sayers in the following eight minutes but were also turned aside.

The game would change in the 23rd minute off a tremendous effort from Casey. The senior caused a turnover blocking a pass from the Skidmore backline and the ball sprung her for a 1-on-1 chance. The midfielder worked her way to the box where she rifled a right-footed shot to the far post and in to take the lead.

Skidmore had a chance to knot the match at 1-1 in the 36th minute, but once again McDonough made the stop to make it 1-0 at the half.

The Thoroughbreds ratcheted up the pressure in the second half as they searched for an equalizer. Skidmore had the first five shots of the half but McDonough and the St. Lawrence backline deftly stopped the attack.

The Scarlet and Brown got a pair of shots from Madison King-Thurber and one from Grace Mochnal but were unable to double the lead.

Instead, the Saints turned to the defensive game keeping Skidmore away from the goal. The Thoroughbreds were only able to get one shot on goal in the final 18 minutes of play and McDonough slammed the door on the effort and helped send her senior class off with the victory.

McDonough stopped seven shots for her second clean sheet of the week, while Sayers stopped just three of the four shots she faced.

The Saints will wrap up their regular season with a pair of road matches next week as the Saints travel down Route 11 on Tuesday to take on Clarkson in a 7 p.m. match before heading to Geneva for a match against William Smith on Saturday.
