Despite eight kills from both
Araiza Acum-Santos and
Sofia Velasquez, the St. Lawrence volleyball team fell in three sets to the Vassar Brewers Friday night in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Five different Saints had six digs and
Bridget Gammons led the team with four blocks to go along with two kills and four digs.
In the first set, the Saints scored the first two points and never trailed in the early part of the set. They got as much as an 11-8 lead, but the Brewers quickly used a 4-0 spurt to take their first lead of the game 12-11. Vassar used this momentum to build up a 16-13 lead, but the Scarlet and Brown responded by scoring the next three, with an ace by
Maggie Layman, a kill by Acum-Santos, and an error by the Brewers.
However, Vassar immediately got the lead back by scoring four of the next five points. The Saints never got any closer than two the rest of the way, ultimately falling 25-20 in set one.
The Brewers started the second set with an 11-3 lead, forcing an early timeout from the Saints. Although St. Lawrence scored the next two points out of the timeout, Vassar went on another run after to balloon their lead even more.
Despite being down by double digits for most of the middle stages of the set, and trailing 23-12 at one point, the Saints used a 4-0 run to make some noise late in the set and get within seven. Acum-Santos had a kill and a service ace in the run and Velasquez also had a kill in this span. Despite that, Vassar scored two of the next four to take a 2-0 set lead.
The Saints fell behind early once again in the second set, going down 8-1 and then 14-4. Shortly after, down 15-5, the Saints scored six straight points behind
Kori Meissner who had a service ace while Velasquez added another kill in this stretch. After this, Vassar was able to stymie the Saints momentum. The rest of the set was evenly matched and the Saints were not able to score more than two straight points, losing the final set 25-20.
St. Lawrence will play their final Liberty League game of the season Saturday afternoon, on the road against the Union Garnet Chargers. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
