Fifth-year forward
Sam Pijpers had a goal and two assists for a four-point day and the Saints got goals from four different goal scorers as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team defeated Union College 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Schenectady, N.Y.
The Saints, who are now unbeaten in their last 11 games, improved to 7-2-4 on the year and 4-0-3 in Liberty League play, while the Garnet Chargers fell to 5-7-4 overall and 1-3-2 in league action.
"That was a difficult game on the road," said head coach
Mike Toshack "The team found a way to get into rhythm and control things in the midfield.
Dennis Argueta was a huge presence in the middle fo the field along with
Nicholas Petrone!"
With the three league points, the Scarlet and Brown (15) claimed the top spot on the league table over Vassar (14), who has a game in hand on the Saints.
Despite the six goals in the match, there was only one scored in the opening 45 minutes of play. As the game approached the 16
th minute the ball was in the air in the Garnet Charger end and wound up on the foot of Pijpers. The forward worked the ball toward the center of the pitch where he would find
Henry Brown. The striker buried a right-footed shot past Jackson Magee to take the 1-0 lead.
With his tenth goal of the season, Brown moved into a tie for tenth in the program record books for goals in a season. The sophomore is now tied with Dana Hollingsworth '77 and Michael Hatch '71. The striker now sits six behind the program record holder in Manny Brito '97, who scored 16 in 1996.
The game remained at 1-0 until the 65
th minute when the Saints doubled their lead. At the 64:35 mark of the match, Pijpers controlled the ball down the wing and made a move around a pair of Union defenders. With the Chargers grabbing at his pockets, the forward slid and booted the ball past the outstretched keeper to double the lead.
The Garnet Chargers would get within one five minutes later with a goal, but the Scarlet and Brown responded quickly in the 70
th minute. Following a great defensive stand, the Saints were running in transition and
Grant Gilmer was able to launch a perfect through ball to a sprinting
Max Mogul. The senior burnt a defender, shook the keeper, and hoisted a shot to the upper 90 making it a 3-1 contest.
Gilmer was not done making plays as the first-year was able to give St. Lawrence breathing room in the 88
th minute with his first career goal. Pijpers, who was all over the pitch, carried the ball to the center 'U' and threaded a pass to Gilmer. The winger ran in and struck a right-footed ball up and in for his first as a collegian and made it 4-1.
The Garnet Chargers got one back in the 90
th minute but it was not enough as the clock ran out.
George Charalambous finished with five saves in the St. Lawrence woodwork, while Magee came up with just two in the opposing goal.
St. Lawrence will play their final road match of the regular season on Saturday as the team heads to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore in a 2 p.m. match.
